Right now the big name in toughened glass is Corning, whose Gorilla Glass is found fronting devices such as Dell's Streak and Samsung's Galaxy Tab, but it seems the company has some competition ahead. Asahi Glass Company is launching Dragontrail, a chemically-strengthened glass that's supposedly six-times stronger than regular soda-lime glass.
Joby set up shop at CES Unveiled, and pulled the curtain off a pair of brand new accessories for Apple's tablet device, the iPad. Combining iPad positioning with protection, the new stands offer owners the ability to position their tablets in several different ways, aiming for the most comfortable position for usage at any given moment, while offering up some form of protection.
What in the world?! Gorillaz, basically the greatest cartoon band of all time, are planning on releasing an album recorded entirely on an iPad FOR FREE on Christmas day. Gorillaz real-world frontman Damon Albarn told UK music paper NME: “I’ve made it on an ipad – I hope I’ll be making the first record on an iPad. ... I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record. ... It’s ironic, being the sort of technophobe and Luddite that I am.” Super fun gifts are being released up until Christmas via an Advent Calendar on Gorillaz website.
As you might already know, our man in the field Vincent was at PEPCOM last night checkin out all the fun electronics - but what was also there? Some sweet, undefeatable Gorilla Glass! This is the sort of glass the toughest devices with screens are apt to use - definitely not a low-grade situation. Gorilla Glass is made to last. Not to scratch, and definitely not to break. Over to the Gorilla Glass table last night and we were treated to a lovely demo by a nice man who let Vincent demo the glass by doing no less than attempting his hardest to break it. Fun!
Gorilla Glass is tough stuff, but if you want more evidence than just a press release then how about someone shooting a Samsung Galaxy Tab at around a meter-range with a CO2 powered air pistol? The shot - carried out by one Gorilla-confident YouTuber metafonic - is certainly sufficient to smash regular glass, but three steel pellets fail to produce even a scratch on the Galaxy Tab's display.
I am a huge fan of the Joby line of gear that bears the gorilla name. The company has flashlights and all sorts of tripods for cameras and mobile phones. The key feature to all of the gear is the articulating tripod that can wrap around just about any item you want to hold your gear in place. Joby has added a new item to its line up called the gorillamobile for iPhone 4.
I have talked on more than one occasion about the cool flashlights that Joby offers in the Gorillatorch line. These things are great for folks that need to work on something with both hands, but need a light to be able to do that work. Joby has unveiled a new Gorillatorch light today called the Swithcback.
Joby makes some cool articulating tripods for all manner of digital cameras and camcorders. The company also has a line of gear for holding smartphones and flashlights as well. I have used several of the Gorillatorch flashlights the company makes and they are all very good for times when you need both hands to work.
Whether or not you feel comfortable putting the Samsung Galaxy Tab into your pocket, we now at least know that it should stand a pretty good chance of not shattering while it's in there. Corning has confirmed that their toughened Gorilla Glass will be protecting the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch touchscreen.
Since the Nintendo Wii hit the market, a number of LCD and plasma flat panel TV screens have met an untimely demise. Give a gamer a Wii Remote to fling about without the wrist strap in place and a broken TV is likely.
