Parrot has updated its distinctive Zikmu speaker range with a new selection of colors together with an improved software client that boosts remote iPod functionality. As well as the original black versions, Parrot will offer white, grey and lime-green/yellow models; each uses the same NXT flat-panel speaker system for 360-degree audio.
Parrot have teamed up with designer Philippe Starck to create a new set of wireless speakers. Called Zikmu, the speakers incorporate an iPod/iPhone dock together with WiFi and Bluetooth; the latter is used both to stream audio from mobile devices such as cellphones using A2DP, and to connect the two speaker columns themselves together.
Philippe Starck may be best known for semi-minimalist furniture, tricky to read watches and a portfolio that could fill your entire home, wardrobe and garden, but the poor guy has recently been taking some time out to sob about how criminally materialistic we all are. His solution: a personal wind-turbine, called Democratic Ecology.
That bloody Philippe Starck, he really needs to stop designing lovely products that so tease my wallet. I actually already have a very similar digital Fossil watch that he created, but this new Veiled design really tickles my temptation glands. Available now in both mens' and womens' versions (the latter being narrower), the analogue face is all-but-obscured by the electroplated crystal glass that looks to be a continuation of the stainless-steel bracelet.
Methinks designer Phillipe Starck was sucking a mint or two when he came up with his latest watch design for Fossil, the O-Ring Digi. How else could you explain the distinctive hole in the middle of the face? Lacking hands, the hours are displayed as numbers while minutes are blocks that build up to create a full ring; the buttons for setting the time are hidden on the back, keeping the whole arrangement sleek.
I suppose Starck could have a particularly nice mole on his wrist that he wanted to show off, or maybe a very small tattoo. Anyway, the O-Ring Digi is available now for $110 from Fossil's website.
We've a soft spot for color-changing lighting here at SlashGear, not to mention minimalistic design, and the Huli lamp on show at CES 2014 fits the bill on both fronts. A stark 20 x 20 x 3 cm aluminum square, the Huli keeps its LEDs on the back, intended to flood the wall behind it with light whether you're picking hues from the iOS app, or letting it synchronize to your music playlist.
Smart thermostats aren't terribly uncommon at this point, though the most popular maker of such devices is arguably Nest. More options are slowly cropping up, however, the latest of which is Netatmo, a French startup that has introduced its smart thermostat, aptly named Thermostat. The Netatmo Thermostat comes with a variety of functionality, including wireless control from a mobile device.
Bill Gates has described his final meeting with Steve Jobs, in an emotional interview with 60 Minutes' Charlie Rose in which he recalled his rival and friend's "forward looking" attitude. "He and I, in a sense, grew up together" Gates said of his relationship with Jobs, a complex friendship that saw each man engage and respect with each other on a personal level, while at the same time lead companies that at many points in their history were fiercely competitive and even antagonistic.
