Sony rolls out Android 5.1.1 for Xperia Z3, Z2 devices

Sony rolls out Android 5.1.1 for Xperia Z3, Z2 devices

It has mostly been bad news lately for Sony fans, with the almost scandalous Xperia Z4 and the contentious Xperia M4 Aqua. But now there's a reason for them to cheer up, especially if they own one or a few of Sony's previous smartphones. The manufacturer has just started the distribution of an Android 5.1.1 update and it will be hitting the whole range of Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 devices, both smartphones and tablets, many of whom are still living in an Android 4.4 Kit Kat world.

Sony Xperia phones now capable of Twitch game streaming

Live-streaming footage of video games has become a staple feature across the current generation of game console and PCs, thanks to the popularity of the Twitch service. However, one platform gameplay streaming and broadcasting hasn't yet become common on is mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Well, that could be changing sooner than expected, as Sony has partnered with Twitch to release a new Android app that lets users broadcast their gaming from select Xperia devices.

Sony isn’t giving up on mobile ever, says mobile chief

Sony isn’t giving up on mobile ever, says mobile chief

"Famous last words", as some often say. Hiroki Totoki, who has been Sony Mobile's head for little over than six months, boldly claimed that the company will never sell or exit its mobile business, despite prophecies of doom early this year. That might not be a surprising claim, considering what business Totoki is leading, but it is something that needs more than just words to inspire confidence. The mobile CEO asks for a bit of patience this year and to look forward to a huge turnaround by 2016 instead.

This hybrid Sony-Nintendo PlayStation prototype began a war

This hybrid Sony-Nintendo PlayStation prototype began a war

As gaming collaborations go, Nintendo and Sony might seem unlikely bedfellows, but the discovery of one super-rare console proves it wasn't always that way. The Nintendo PlayStation was to be a grand coming-together of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and a CD component built by Sony for a new type of SNES CD game. The deal eventually soured, and Sony went its own way on the PlayStation project, but not before a small number of prototypes were constructed.

Sony MHC-V7D speaker shows off sound you can see in new video

Sony MHC-V7D speaker shows off sound you can see in new video

It's hard to show off just how powerful a speaker can be if you aren't there in person to hear the speaker play. Sony is trying to show off its new MHC-V7D speaker on video and to do so it has poured red, blue, and yellow paint into the speaker cone surface and then cranked the tunes. The sound pressure from the track being played, something called Hideaway, makes the paint leap off the speaker.

Sony launches own crowdfunding platform “First Flight”

Sony launches own crowdfunding platform “First Flight”

Although Sony is still a big name in the industry, it no longer has the same force it had back in the days. It sold off its VAIO PC business to shed some unnecessary weight and it seems that its mobile devices might soon be on the way out as well. On the other hand, it also needs new businesses and products to keep it afloat, but a risk-averse culture and financial considerations keep it from jumping into more adventurous pursuits. The solution? A crowdfunding platform that encourages experimentation but, at the same time, shields it somewhat from failure.

Sony Xperia Z3+ camera might be its own saving grace

Sony Xperia Z3+ camera might be its own saving grace

Sony may have had a misstep with the Xperia Z4/Xperia Z3+ when it came to the choice of a Snapdragon 810 processor, but it is almost inconceivable that it would mess up the camera sensor, one of the key businesses of the company. Sony might have just proven it still got chops in that field. Digital photography benchmarking site DxOMark has just published their report on the latest Sony "flagship" and, as expected, it fares fairly well. Though not enough to become the new king of the hill.

Sony E5663 could be the Xperia Z4 Compact

Sony E5663 could be the Xperia Z4 Compact

It is hard to fathom Sony's mind these days, which makes it difficult to discern its gameplay when mobile devices are involved. The Xperia Z4/Z3+ was, to put it mildly, somewhat of a disappointment. It seems, however, that the Japanese manufacturer might have a device that could offset that blunder. A certain E5663 has appeared in GFXBench's listings and though it might be intended to launch in India, at least initially, signs point to what could possibly a noteworthy successor to the Xperia Z3 Compact pictured above.

Is Sony poisoning the Kickstarter well?

Is Sony poisoning the Kickstarter well?

Kickstarter has made dreams come true, whether it be some maker's dream product or a backer's dream game. But the promise of crowdfunding isn't completely foolproof, and Kickstarter has seen its fair share of people trying to take advantage of loopholes and fine prints, like this latest issue surrounding Shenmue 3. It was revealed that Sony was somewhat "supporting" the game's production, ruffling a few feathers and raising some questions. Has Sony found a way to game the Kickstarter system or is it completely within bounds? Or has Sony set a pattern that could potentially ruin Kickstarter for indies and smaller groupus?
