Nokia announces Windows Phone partnership

Nokia has announced a partnership with Microsoft, adopting Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform. In the process, Symbian will become a "franchise platform", while MeeGo will be an open-source, mobile operating system project; Nokia still expects to ship a MeeGo device later in 2011, but the platform will be considered as for "longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences."

MeeGo UI update goes covert ahead of “feature complete” reveal

Nokia is secretly readying an updated UI for MeeGo devices, with the Qt developers responsible for the new UI components for Qt Quick announcing that, for the moment, they will not be pushing out MeeGo changes to the public. The decision comes as the new MeeGo UI starts "to become feature complete"; Nokia won't confirm any timescale at this stage, but with MWC 2011 approaching and new CEO Stephen Elop making his first real public debut to talk about the company's strategies moving forward, we wouldn't be surprised if this was intended to keep a Barcelona reveal under wraps.

Nokia focusing on UI dynamics for MeeGo; needs to “regain the imagination”

Nokia SVP of Design Marko Ahtisaari has admitted that the company still needs "to somehow regain the imagination," though as always that route won't involve Android. "We'll go where we can add value," Ahtisaari said at LeWeb 2010 this morning, "that's not the case at the moment with Android." Instead, Nokia's design team is focused on new homescreen paradigms ahead of MeeGo's launch in 2011, with Ahtisaari arguing that the UI dynamics of iOS, Symbian and Android aren't quite there yet.
