Samsung Profits Drop, Saved Only By Smartphones And Tablets

Samsung reported a 30 percent drop to $2.6 billion in their Q1 2011 profits when compared to the same quarter last year. The Korean electronics manufacturer blames the dip on falling chip prices and slowing display sales. What's kept going strong, is there smartphone sales, including its Galaxy S series, which have jumped 18 percent from the previous year.

At a utterly lovely Sprint media event at CTIA 2011, gold and yellow tones abound, Sprint has announced what they hope will be a heavy contender in this massively competitive 2011 season for Android. It began with a lovely floaty Andy video in full 3D, showing him float about, transforming things from flat to 3D. It was instantly apparent that the device would be the next step in the EVO line. The first announcment was the HTC EVO 3D, the first 4G device with a dual-core and 3D capability with no glasses needed.

As we suspected when the original iPad was pulled from Best Buy's inventory on Tuesday, the iPad 2 (and its nifty cover) will be available in the store on Friday, March 11. Microsoft Sells 1.9 Million Consoles in December, Sees Year-Over-Year Growth

Earlier today, we reported that Microsoft was seeing strong sales of its home videogame console, the Xbox 360. So strong, in fact, that Larry Hryb (or Major Nelson, if you prefer) was told that Microsoft had literally "run out" of the consoles. With stock supposedly tight in January and February as well, Major Nelson was quick to note that if they didn't get first place in console sales from the NPD group with their results today, it would be due to strong sales, and not the opposite. Microsoft has released the NPD's highlight reel for the 360, and sure enough, Microsoft's console is doing very well.

Today, market researcher NPD is supposed to release the sales rankings of the video game consoles. While it may not be released publicly, which NPD has chosen to do in the past, Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Director of Programming Larry Hryb has come forward and tweeted why Microsoft may not be at the head of the pack if the numbers do get released. And, in a strange twist of fate, it's not because the Xbox 360 isn't popular, but it may be because the console is too popular.
