Over 10 million PlayStation 4 units sold to date

Sony has suggested today at their live conference during Gamescom 2014 that they've sold more than 10 million PlayStation 4 units to date. That's 10 million PS4s sold to end customers, not just shipped. Not just released to the public to stores, but in gamer hands, being used.

The most recent report from Microsoft was this July – the beginning of July, to be fair – where they suggested they'd sold 5 million units worldwide. They've certainly upped their number since then, but still – there's a gap. A rather sizable gap.

Sony made certain they said "sold through", too. This is not a mincing of words, a flipping of scripts. It's end users. "Just to be clear, that is sold-through to consumers."

As noted by NeoGaf member nynt9, a 2008 public release from Microsoft about the Xbox 360 reaching 10 million in US console sales made the following clear:

"History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry." – Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft

Meanwhile Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have decided to make "Rise of the Tomb Raider" an Xbox One exclusive. We'll have to let them sit and think about what they've done this afternoon.
