My sentiment exactly. Outlook does not have half the decent features Hotmail had. Must have been a team of morons who designed it and could not see the critical workings of Hotmail. I am sure Microsoft has pissed off majority of users and a mass exodus will follow.

For now outlook.com is most likely a secondary SMTP address. it will be a while before they do the full conversion on the back end.

I’m very surprised by this statement. Everything I have read on Outlook.com has suggested the exact opposite. Most people hated hotmail’s GUI and wanted nothing to do with it but once they have the new outlook.com a try they were happily surprised by it.

When they get a completely mobile (ie usable from a USB stick) service such as that provided by Thunderbird Mobile, that also integrates seamlessly with MS Outlook and gives you the flexibilty to use either or both with complete sharing of emails in and out, call me back!

Hotmail wasn’t much to look at, but this new “Metro” interface is horrific. It’s as if an Old Navy advertisement puked its guts out after a week of binge drinking. If this is the new look of things from Microsoft, remind me to block all Microsoft domains from my router so I don’t have to be subjected to this eye pain.

Thanks for your article – this has just resolved a long-standing tech call with MS, trying to find out why I have not been able to log into Hotmail the last 2 weeks. I can now get my Inbox via Outlook. They were obviously not able to tell me this due to marketing embargo. Meantime very pissed off and moving my Hotmail to a new Gmail account.

Eh, I won’t be too disappointed when they change it. I’ve never found Hotmail’s interface to be all that great (and I don’t even think Gmail is all that it could be personally) and a change would probably be welcome.

Normally I would agree with such a sentiment, but microsoft has a recent history of impressive support for its users. I know for me, since I was a very old skydrive user on two account, I got grandfathered into keeping my free 25 gigs. They may phase things out at a later time, but they have shown that they are willing to allow their older and faithful userbase to keep their previous benefits.

When companies want to establish a brand, they make huge promises (like lifetime free service) and later when they are rolling in the dough, they start limiting the free stuff. Never trust “free stuff” again, especially from M$.
Geocities, Lycos, Angel, all promised lifetime free hosting… all now dead as a doornail.
Whenever you see “FREE” remember: “It’s A Trap!”
