OS X 10.9.3 to bring 4K display and 60 Hz output on 2013 MacBook Pro

It seems that Apple is ready to turbo charge the display capabilities of its current hardware lineup with the upcoming OS X 10.9.3 update. Spotted by beta testers is a new setting that enables native resolution on 4K display as well as 4K output at 60 Hz on 2013 Retina MacBook Pros.

Apple has just released the first beta for the next 10.9 release to developers. The changes introduced early at this stage haven't yet been made known, but observant testers noticed some new settings in relation to displays and video output.

With the update, owners of last year's retina display MacBook Pro will be able to enjoy native resolutions when connecting to a 4K display. Currently, System Preferences only displayed resolutions for the MacBook Pro itself, scaled when necessary. The layout has been revamped a bit to include a new Native option.

Beta testers have also been reporting that a new refresh rate has been made available, also with 4K display resolutions. Previously, the 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 4K resolutions were only supported at a 24 Hz refresh rate. According to users, 4K display output will be able to run at a refresh rate of 60 Hz, which should produce a smoother visual experience.

The new refresh rate is still unverified, though the new Display preferences interface looks quite unfinished. The addition of support for 4K displays could also be an indicator that Apple might be working on its own high-resolution 4K display to be revealed later this year.
