Update on my previous post, I got the latest version of nano 8GB by explaining my situation to customer relation and let them know how frustrated I am and how I don't trust their nano anymore since it exploded. I have to say the new nano still impresses me, it's smooth, slick, small, but I have one HUGE complain about it. The battery life is ridiculously horrible. It's advertised that it can go "up to" 24 hours... but in reality, it only lasted 'bout 5 hrs for me. I mean, if it only runs for 18 to 15 hrs, I can understand if they claim 24 hrs.... but 5 hrs?? (I don't leave my screen on) I think that's pretty horrible.

About 3 years ago, long before Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire, I had an iPod Nano Fire. That was about the time I decided I wouldn't buy another iPod (although I did subsequently own a 1st gen iPad... which was great by the way). I didn't have a dramatic explosion like a previous poster but I did witness smoke rising across the room and ran to unplug it. I didn't bother to report it (memo to self, always report such things to the company so that someone else's house won't burn down) but turns out I should have.

Apple, you have the serial numbers and if someone (like me) bought one at the Apple Store (like I did), the least you could do is to let them have a new one (it would be GREAT P.R. and I wouldn't mind a new nano... or even a shuffle). That's my 1.75 cents.

Sandman, no I wasn't offended because I'm trying to get new iPod for free. I was offended because she came to me and told me they have recycle program which knocks 10% off and she'll double that "for me". The gesture is very obvious, she's trying to throw a sales pitch when something is clearly their own fault. As I mentioned on my post, I'm NOT asking for a brand new iPod. I told her that I want mine to be replaced but I do NOT want the same version anymore since I don't trust it anymore. Any newer version will be fine, just not the same version and I don't care if it's refurb. I'm not trying to get a new iPod, I just don't want to put more money in, refurb or not, doesn't matter to me. If you got into car accident because of the vehicle manufacture's own fault, and they come up to you and say, ok we can recycle your car for you and give you some discount if you buy our new car, wouldn't you be offended? I'm trying to get my ipod replaced, I don't want to throw more money in... period.

I will add that since it damaged other property, that they should take care of that somehow, but I don't think the store manager is going to be able to help you with that.
Funny enough my 1st gen nano EXPLODED on Sat before I even saw the news of the recall. The battery exploded, the 30-pin connector charger end burned and the click wheel melted. It caused small explosion and I was glad my kids weren't around when it exploded, but it could actually do some serious harm to people. It also burned the vinyl case of my kindle. I called AppleCare the very next morning and was getting nice feedback from the rep saying that I'll be taken care of. I was told that I could go to the store and it's up to the store manager's discretion whether or not she'll give me a replacement. But rest assured, he will take care of me if I'm not happy with the store manager's response. I went to the store, had to wait 10 min to talk to a Genius Bar rep which I described my scenario and that's when I learned Apple issued a recall yesterday. He offered to replace mine, and I asked which version will I get and he said the same one. I told him no, I'm not going to be happy with that because I don't trust that model anymore. Then I asked that I want to talk to the store manager and he told me that store manager can't do anything, but i insisted. So.. the store manager came out and the FIRST THING she offered me was "oh we have this iPod recycle program which grants 10% discount toward new iPod purchase, but I will double that for you". SERIOUSLY??? your device almost blew up @ my kid's face and you're trying to make a sales here? I was EXTREMELY insulted by the offer. I'm trying to get a solution here and she's trying to make a sales........how ridiculous is that. I told her I was extremely offended by that offer. Imagine this, you drive a car, you got into a car accident and the first thing they do is.. oh I'll replace your current car which is known for explosion issue. When you said you don't want that, then they say, what about this, buy a new car from us and we'll give you discount..... RIDICULOUS. Words cannot describe how angry I was when I heard about the offer. She later on made some phone calls and eventually came up to me and said the BEST she can "help me out" with is to offer me the face value of the nano ($79) and 10% recycle discount toward new iPod purchase, so.. if I make up the difference of $37.xx + tax then she'll give me a new one instead. I told her I don't want to pay anything, I don't care if it's new or refurb I want mine replaced and it just doesn't have to be this gen since I don't trust this gen anymore. She said she can't do anything 'bout it, she doesn't have any refurb one in stock and kept saying how she was trying to help me out and she was going beyond her limit to HELP ME OUT. Seriously... first offended me by trying to make more sales pitch, THEN trying to make me feel like she was "HELPING ME OUT" by doing all that work. I was at the store for 1.5 hrs with a 2 yr old toddler and a 6 week old baby and it was just ridiculous how they're handling this. I've spent 2.5 hrs yesterday (1 hr with AppleCare and 1.5hr in store) and I was hoping that I could get this resolved FAST but I was so wrong. Right now I'm trying to contact the customer rep who helped me out over the phone and see if I can get this square away. I will post update if I hear anything back. But the experience on this is just extremely ridiculous. They really need to know how to treat customers, they're NOT helping me out, they're doing their job and stop insulting customers by trying to throw more sales pitch out there.

The serial number also appears on the Nano screen: settings > about. I can't access the serial number on the back because my 1st Gen Nano is sheathed in a very tight rubber Speck case. I bought that because the black iPod case started showing scuffs and scratches from the beginning, and those scratches got me $30 or so in the class-action settlement. The unit is still a wonder and has earned love beyond its obviously cursed birth.

If the product is defective, why do we have to go through this review process. Apple is ridiculous...they charge too much for products that are no more amazing than any of their competitors...their secret sauce is the online store/content. When the G1 nano's came out, there was widespread dis-satisfaction with the materials used in the body (i.e. lots of scratches from normal use) which they denied and effectively ignored. Now years later...they begrudgingly conceed a QA issue with the battery. However; instead of just making it right you have to ship it to them so they can "check it out" and maybe you'll get a non-defective product as a response...or you may end up being billed $100 plus tax for their review process and possibly no replacement unit at all. Apple is no different from any profit seeking entity out there and their product quality is just as average...yet they have engendered a lemming following that blindly feeds their coffers with each evolutionary release of their widgets. I prefer competition and innovation beyond the margins of a single company. My nano was a gift and if Apple replaces it...for free...I will likely gift it to my daughter. I think this company has truly become lost in their apple shaped narcissism.

Got an email regarding my recall today...but look at the wording that is in the email:

Apple may charge you a diagnostic fee, including shipping charges, of no more than one hundred ($100) dollars US, plus applicable tax, if Apple inspects your product and determines based on the inspection that the product does not require service. If Apple determines, while inspecting your product, that service is needed due to the failure of parts that are neither supplied by Apple nor Apple-branded, Apple may return the product to you without servicing it, and may charge you the diagnostic fee plus applicable sales tax.

WTF??? I may be charged $100.00???

Apple is making this difficult just like everything else they do, and exercising the total control Jobs built into the company.
Every other company in the world lets you type in your serial number and you instantly get a response as to whether your product is involved in a recall, along with the exact remedy the company is taking to fix it.
Not Apple.
You have to go through hoops by filling out their form and supplying login information, and then they'll get back to you.
And they sure don't offer any support to ask questions about it first. Just fill out the form as you're told, and they'll direct you from there.
