OK I agree with that completely. And really android was being worked on 2 years before the iPhone came out so it was really only a matter of time. Apple just helped move things along a little bit.

Exactly. The article doesn’t go there at all, but that was the accusation Jobs leveled at Schmidt and, of course, it is true. Like Tim Cook said in his quarterly conference call the other day “they should just go and invent their own stuff.

Just to be clear I agree with you that Apple was the first to take smartphones mainstream.

I was merely disproving kwes2677′s belief that without the iPhone
smartphones would look like Blackberries today. Obviously not true since
the LG Prada designed it first before Apple.

What you’re saying is more reasonable than what kwes2677 said. kwes2677 falls into the camp of people who think Apple was the first to design something that looks like the iPhone.

Yes I’m sure about that. The LG leads was a terrible phone, period. Sure it came out before the iPhone, but it didn’t do anything right. I mean come on.. it didn’t even have a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Not to mention the display was black and white! Apple didn’t do it first, but they were the first to do it right.

Don’t worry. I didn’t miss anything. My point is that it doesn’t matter if Apple was the first to make it solid or appealing to the public. First to be appealing is not the same as first to create. That is the key distinction. The LG Prada was the first to herald the modern smartphone design, whether it was mass accepted or not.

I agree with Stocklone. LG could have released the exact same iPhone and slapped an LG logo on it and it still wouldn’t have been appealing to the mass public. That’s because Apple had the advantage of momentum, brand awareness and reputation.

Disgusting or not is irrelevant. LG was still the first to create such a design, not Apple. Doing something better doesn’t make prior art suddenly disappear.

That was a disgusting phone that was executed terribly, as is the way with LG. Apple was the first to create a solid multitouch, smart phone. Every phone that LG has made has been garbage.
