What does being bundled with devices have to do with whether users choose Opera because of Presto or not? That’s what we are discussing here!

I pointed out that a user interface is not just a skin. You think Webkit is a browser, but it isn’t. You need to build an entire UI on top of Webkit.

And so the point is that people don’t care which engine they are using. They care about the UI/experience.

Yes, bundled with the devices, I don’t know of any recent cases, but I know it was done in the past. Example: The Wii.

For example: reduced memory consumption. Some users surely like the interface, others had it bundled with their device. Others used it as an alternative… there are many motives. By moving to webkit, probably half of these motives are invalidated.
Granted, Presto had issues, so while they will loose part of their user base, they may gain another part which was initially driven away by these issues.
In the end, the engineers have to take the design and architecture decisions, and that is what matters. Webkit is good. It’s just that it’s hard to believe that another Webkit spinoff would have much success, and it’s always a somehow sad thing when some variety (some software DNA) is lost from the software pool.
