I was going to contribute using enyo. However then i thought.. well what stops HP from just releasing whatever is created from now until the summer ?

So i think i will wait and make sure HP isn't trying to play games with me and see what is actually going to be included when it truly is released and what license its under.

webOS is a SOLUTION LOOKING FOR A PROBLEM!!!

You can never have a solution looking for a problem compete in the market, or attract developers, or anything. This is the same exact problem Windows Phone 7 has for Microsoft. No one needs a Microsoft Phone, except Microsoft needs you to have a Microsoft Phone if Microsoft is expected to survive another decade.

I bought a TouchPad in the firesale and it's a beautiful piece of technology. I also got an iPad when they first came out and I find WebOS superior to iOS in a number of ways. Once overclocked, the TP is very snappy - no complaints about responsiveness at all. And my TP recently got is 2nd over-the-air upgrade so it's not a stagnant OS at all. These steps by HP look very positive and I hope they succeed.

Well geez, jescott418, I'd say that poor business decisions don't reflect on the operating system as much as on the internal machinations of those companies. The TouchPad got the second-best reviews of any tablet after the iPad. I think that speaks to it's quality. HP was trying to cut their losses by killing the hardware, a decision made by a CEO who'd never run a hardware company before; I don't know why Palm did such a sucky job of building up an ecosystem. This OS may always be a hobby OS from here on out, dunno. Maybe at some point, HP will get back in the tablet hardware game, or perhaps a tablet manufacturer or two will eventually offer it as an OS alternative to Android. I used it when I had a Palm Pre, and I use it now that I have a TouchPad. I like it a lot, and hope that it gets the support (and apps) that it deserves.

The article says they're aiming for cross-platform support. It would be smart on their part to offer versions of it for any of the android devices currently out there. They can make money just from having an app store and pennies-on-the-dollar cuts. I for one welcome the competition into the field, as it will push everyone forward.
Does anybody really care? If Web OS was really that good. How come two companies failed to make it work? Palm had some really good talent from former Apple people. It failed, HP just plain failed at it completely. Maybe open source will help. But the problem with open source is that its got to have a platform that wants it. Otherwise its just a hobby OS for those who bought those HP tablets at fire sale prices.

all these developer words like enyo and linux and script and stuff reads a bit like latin to me. So i'm not sure what all this means. But why would i want to run something in a browser? Second, does switching to linux mean it's more like android and does it mean that it's not gonna have all the delay you get original webos where you hit the screen and have to wait two seconds for the button press to respond.
