They are not closed because they keep making NEW games every year. Bethesda has old games but they were smart and put them on xbox live to play with friends. That's called multiplayer. And I know you're not playing the campaign of Baldur’s Gate from Bioware. If you are, pop in a new game and open your eyes. You'll be amazed with the advancements they've made in graphics. lol

I see the point of this article, if you play with friends you can have good fun, otherwise multiplayer is and arena of angry nerds trying to prove themselves they are good at something in their life.
I've never heard so many insults and swearing during a Cod match, rather then having fun and new friends the only target is to put you down.

Hello Don Reisinger, You are a lame. I can't believe they pay you to write this stuff. Hey Slashgear! There are a thousand people in the Battlefield Forums that can do the same thing, bitch about the game, and they do it for free. The fact that you don't like multiplayer is not article worthy. Society isn't turning angry because of multiplayer games, it's just competitive jeering. If you can't handle it, go play the Mario or something, but watch out, Koopa may make you cry. The reason game developers put so much time and energy into the multiplayer part is because people play it for years. I know no one... NO ONE who is still playing the campaign of ANY game 4 years later. Once you play it, you might play it again on HARD and that's it. On the flipside, there are people still playing HALO 1 Multiplayer which is 10 years old. You're complaining about people being better than you so it's not fun?! Seriously?! I think you mother held you too much. Try practicing. You suck at video games and you need to do something else with your life. I'd suggest spelunking. Don't forget the helmet.

I completely agree with the article. I used to really enjoy playing COD but I can't invest as much time to gaming as I used to now. Multiplayer is fun only when your willing to invest many hours to actually become really good and compete. There are great single player games out there but they are becoming less and less the norm. Most of the big games focus on multiplayer. Personally I enjoy Gears of War 3 most of the modes have a co-op element and you don't feel like your getting complete owned.

The funniest part of the online gaming experience is doing "virtual work" for "virtual pay". I realized at one point that I was spending x hours of my day running around in mineshafts pick-axing for virtual gems, doing a fake job earning fake money. That was the day I retired from MMORPG's and started upgrading my real life. Now I have a lot of real money and a real-time fun life, not to mention a hot wife. Something to think about, my fellow nerds!

Play Halo Reach. You can choose to be matched only with players that don't talk, skill based matchmaking (Trueskill) means that nearly all matches will be fair, and people don't seem to be as angry in Halo Reach as they do in CoD.

I'd just like to point out that the main reason given, was the people you play with online. I think this is proof that the article title should actually be "Console FPS online multiplayer gaming is the bane of my existence." Shooters on consoles are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to maturity and where you'll find the 1 percentile hanging out. This ruins it for a lot of people, like me and you. If you like shooters and maturity, play on the PC, where you can choose from a number of different servers to find a play group that suits you. Plus the addition of playing other game types online (roleplaying, strategy, simulation, board, and card games all have well developed communities online as well).
Console gamers are all dumped into the same category and the gameplay suffers because of it. PCs allow more options for all (harder hardcore, competitive casual, and noobs all having fun)

In BF3, as with many of that genre, the single player is basically training for those new to the game.

I'm on xbox live a lot and, at least in the games I play, there isn't a lot of trash talk between strangers. If there is it isn't tolerated for long.

Maybe you should give it another try.

Absolutely pointless article.

It's not your opinion that is wrong. If you prefer single-player campaign/story driven games to MP games, that is absolutely fine. What's pointless about this article is that you are making it as if there are hardly any single-player focused games anymore when the truth is that there are still a ton. There should be a place in the market for both single-player and MP focused games, and both types of games do share significant portions of the market. So why again was this article written?

Each to his own. Personally I find single player gaming very unsatisfying and rarely play anything that is not multiplayer. On the other hand I don't really enjoy quick 'deathmatch' type online games and that is where you find annoying kids. The the games I enjoy are usually more historic and a mission can be hours long, eg WW2-OL, IL2, and tend to have a more grown up client-base so childish taunting is rare. I also used to play Everquest & LOTR type games and there was not much immature behaviour in those either (I believe a report once said the average EQ player was in their 30s)

WAAH a company made a game that I don't like! GO PLAY A DIFFERENT ONE.
I think the article kind of misses the point. You definitely have your right to your opinion, and everyone has different preferences with respect to multiplayer. It's not for everyone. Yes, there are some jerks out there...heck, I've chastised friends on my own team for taunting other players.....don't dish it out if you can't take it, and it's just impolite and immature anyways.

That having been said, multiplayer games like BF3 are *intended* for a different audience. It's not that EA couldn't make a good single player game. The Battlefield games have *always* been focused on multiplayer, whereas it was an add-on for the COD games (originally at least). What you're seeing is EA put its focus on the "niche" they designed their game to serve.....ones who want a deeper, more tactical multiplayer experience than they get with regular shooters. The game is very good at what it is intended to be good at. The single player, not so much. But the two games appeal to audiences that have some overlap, yet are different.

There's nothing wrong with either mode......there are terrible, boring single player games, and there are exciting, well done single player games (ie. Skyrim, Heavy Rain, Bioshock, etc.). In the same manner there are games where the multiplayer is just......there.....and others who have a really compelling multiplayer experience.

We're social animals....we like playing with others. There's only so much many of us can take of just interacting with a computer/console before we're itching to get some interaction with other humans. I loved the first Dragon Age, and played it to death, but after 100 hours of investment in that game, I was ready for something where I could talk to other people.

The challenge level from overcoming another human is far greater than overcoming a computer opponent....the AI just isn't there yet.

Lets be real here.. You aren't a compeitive person and you don't like competing against others.. Just because you don't doesn't mean that others can't have a good time and enjoy themselves in a compeitive fun environment. There are bad apples, but if you just leave your mic off and even turn off the sound of the other players. That way you can have the multiplayer experience with a much better AI opponent and the game will always be better than your single player experience. I don't blame EA for making it an after thought; I only bought it for the multiplayer.

I think Gears of War 1 multiplayer really brought out the worst apples and if you played that one you might have a distaste for it. Having a large amount of people on your team like BF3 makes the game less engaging but more casual to just sit and play for two games and quit.

I respect your point of view, but I don't think you have a lot of support there.. (IMO)

Nothing beats playing against an opponent that is controlled by another human being, its what I love of online play. I also get annoyed like you do and wonder why they haven't implemented the obvious solution: the option to play with gamers of a certain age range or skill level!

Got to agree with you about 1942, what the writer clearly doesn't know about battlefields history is that it has always been a multiplayer focus game. The originals didn't even have a story, just playing what would be an online game against AI. So yes EA probably forced their hand into including a solo campaign

I couldn't agree more its so frustrating to pick up a new game go and beat the campaign then try and dive into multiplayer just to get killed repeatedly over and over and over etc... How are you supposed to learn when you are paired up with people who seem to do this for a living?

I've never been a big COD fan so I can't really comment on its single player. However, I'm personally very glad that Battlefield 3 was made the way it was. All of us battlefield players that have been playing since 1942 most likely think of the single player as an afterthought as well. EA probably just forced them to do it anyways I think there are plenty of games with great single player experiences. I loved gow3's single player. That one cut scene almost made me cry, you know what I'm talking about. I think it'd be better if game developers weren't forced to make single player or multiplayer into a game that wasn't really meant for it. And they should be sold for a better price.
