I recently purcahsed some OM lenses and a OM-4/3 adapter thinking that the old 35-70 lens would become a 70-140. not the case liek 3w traveller says. I A/B'd it against my kit 40-150 and the focal lengths were nearly the same. The only differace was that the f-stop doubled (whioch was not a good thing.I had to use significantly longer shutter speeds to obtain the same exposure. I basically had a 35-70 f8 lens. The whole double your focal length thing really misleads people. If you had the old lens on a 35 mm camera and compared it to the same lens on you digital you might see the differance but unless you happen to have a vast collection of very fast old OM lenses there is no point in going legacy on a new digital.

I like to think of it as a reference... we, for some reason use 35mm as the anchor to relate focal length. reality is its the format of the camera which matters more. so below, what russel is saying is more true than saying a 50 is a 50... it is a 50mm, yes, but the focal length does effectively change when you put it on a different format sensor.. so a 50mm on a medium or large format camera is actually a wide angle. its not so much the number thats changing.. the distance is still the same from lens element to sensor/film, but its the size of sensor/film that determines the actual field of view.

this is a good question... while we obviously know that an actual m4/3s lens will be exactly doubled, he was talking about an OM lens which requires an adapter.. he is saying it will affect focal length a little more. is this because there is a greater distance between sensor and lens and the magnification is altered? to my knowledge it isn't so technically shouldn't be more, but then again, im not sure...

Yes, a 50mm is a description of the distance from the sensor to the focus element of the lens. Since the sensor is half the size of film, that means the crop factor is 2x. That means the 50mm would give you the equivalent 'zoom' of a 100mm lens on a 35mm camera. Unlike those Nikon 1 cameras, that clock in a a crop factor of about 2.7, yikes!

A fifty will always be a fifty. the FieldOfView depends on the focal length and the size of the recording media (be it film, digi, or whatever). None of that changes a fifty into anything else though.

Your OM lenses will mount on an Oly digital using an adapter. There
focal length will be more than doubled. So your 50mm standard lens will
now give you the images of a 100mm (with the adapter, more like 115 or
so) lens.
