Granted, the OLPC people are bad at delivering. But you go right off the rails when insisting that the only thing needed in poor(er) countries are "food, water, medicine, and other basic services." Apparently, you're not including mobile phones in basic services, because they have made a huge difference to well being, financial and physical, in emerging markets.

The OLPC could have slotted into providing more of that same functionality, with its mesh networking and security, if its distribution had been well managed. It's just plain silly to say providing information and connections for poor people is a luxury when it has such a large and obvious impact on the bottom line.

I've seen it, Marvell has been showing their Armada 610 tablet reference designs since CES. Simply watch my videos. They simply quote bill of material and anufacturing costs, which today definitely are below $100 as soon as Governments order a few millions of them.

iPad is hugely overpriced.
