to be fair I don't think there were a whole lot of ppl that naitively knew how to use windows 95 when the start button was first introduced either. Thats why it was called "Start"
i understand that a lot of people don't like windows 8 and I do sympathze but honestly what is MS supposed to do? Not innovate and stay behind the times? So many of the people complaining about windows 8 are the same people who said that windows vista/7 was a glossy version of XP with no real change. And those were still the same people that complained how much XP/Vista/7 blew on a tablet.
It honestly feels like MS can't make some ppl happy.

XP users should get over it. Ur OS is ancient now. Thats a fact of life, upgrade or you don't get the newest stuff. Vista on the other hand, while it blows, is new enough that it shouldn't be restricted from this.

So something that is Much faster, smoother, "smaller" (not as bloated), stabler, optimized for a verity of inputs is the largest fuckup out there...?

If you (a trained IT) has to google to open a start menu or turn of the computer, the problem dosen't isn't with the OS. The problems is you.

I know countless of "average joes" who I stuck Windows 8 in front and they were able to work around in Windows 8. At first it took some time, but after that learning curve, they were able to navigate quite effectively.

You're BSing either way. That you are a trained IT, or you had to google how to work the computer. (Or Both).

If you want to be stuck in the past, that's fine. But plenty of us will upgrade to the future. And windows 8, if you get around to actually USE and realize the concept behind it, is a huge upgrade from Windows 7.

Windows 8 is the worst Microsoft fuckup since Microsoft Bob, throwing everything functional and usable about the system out the window in a vain attempt to be hip and cool like Apple. It's obvious their backs are against the walls. When someone like me, trained in IT, has to google how to ooen the damn start menu or turn off the computer, then its obvious something is wrong.

$40 is not the only expense. I've upgraded hundreds of users from XP to Vista and to Windows 7. Every upgrade had things that break. Windows XP users don't care about how old the O/S is. They care that it is reliable and that their applications do the job that they bought them to do. It's pretty much expected that the latest version of windows will not run on the older XP machines. That means they need to buy newer hardware. Then of course, they need to buy upgrades to their application suites. I've spent a lot of time with the Windows Hardware Quality Labs people getting new hardware platforms certified to run the latest O/S. Certain hardware support is dropped in the name of progree and revenue. The PC vendors like this model as it generates sales of new PCs.

So forcing an upgrade of the hardware/software/OS just to run Office 2013 is not a strong strategic move for Office 2013. Maybe that's why Microsoft made them their own business unit - they either grow market share for office apps or they're gone. I agree with Norm's comments - they're plenty of office suites to choose from and compatibility and features are pretty similar.

The next successful office suite will integrate seamlessly with android and iOS platforms. Is Office 2013 going to do that?

I get XP as even Google is ditching support for Chrome in XP. Firefox doing the same. So is many apps. But Vista is just a Windows 7 beta and I question why Microsoft would simply ignore that user base. Because I think many would find it hard to justify upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. How many would even want to pay the $40 to upgrade to Windows 8?

So??? With at least 5 decent office suites to pick from that are FREE, why should we even bother spending hundreds on Office 2013? If Microsoft keeps forcing upgrades on people, we'll find an attractive alternative.

People (okay, I) want to settle into their devices for a while - stop the cycle-of-stupid... software upgrades for security, lead to hardware upgrades for software while the tech leaders never coming up with a platform or network infrastructure that effectively deals with security issues.

Great for them I guess.

Look I get that a lot of Windows users don't adopt as fast as Apple users to new operating systems and software versions. Its a known fact this happens. Just look at XP as a perfect example of that. But I am not sure anyone has to move to Windows 8 and even more to the point the problem with change is that it breaks things. Apple may make changes but at least it gives the user some time to plan for the upgrade. Microsoft to me is all of sudden making that change happen much faster now. I think it will be a shock for those who have typically dragged their feet on accepting change. As both a Mac and PC user I have always noticed a difference in Mac and PC use. PC users can basically stay locked in the past a lot longer then Mac users without it affecting them. Maybe that's changing now.

For $40 to upgrade to Windows 8, is that a problem...?

XP...? Well, XP is just getting old and ready to retire.
Vista..?

Honestly? You shouldn't be on less than Windows 7 right now. And for $40, those who have the hardware capacities SHOULD upgrade to Windows 8.
