Ok I cancelled my preorder a couple of days ago because of hardware inconsistencies in user experiences. I then saw the rooted Adam running splendidly and had some cancellation remorse. But I still think there would have been a strong chance that there would have been some issue with the Adam I ordered. So for now I'm happy that I cancelled.
I'll be watching Notion Ink on how they deal with things for any future purchase.

@ Mr. Burns
I find it sad to see tech writers only relying on bashing new innovative products like the ADAM to get attention. I understand how it works, if your praise it a few people read it. If you bash it everybody reads it and the posting battle begins. I also understand there's only few new tablet computers out right now to compare (or bash) to the standard tablets (IPAD & Galaxy Tab) available. These are wonderful devices for what they do (mostly to kill time). These are multi-billion dollar companies they should be making the best products. To compare Notion Ink (NI) to Apple or Samsung in a business sense is just silly. All I ask is for balance reporting, don't just only report the nightmare stories about the ADAM. I now EXPECT the same tough reporting for the XOOM and every other tablet that comes out this year.

Please also post the experience of mada, who contacted the notion ink support that he has defective screen but notion ink says that it's android which has a bug in displaying and notion ink says it is correct and ok and they don't want to replace his unit. Maybe when you write it they change their mind and finally start to respect ALL customers. notionink addicts forum is full of such a stories from users sending emails for support and notionink is ignoring their problems. Other user reported problems with not working camera and other people have issues with screen, gps not working etc.
This is very important as the poeple who aren't satisfied (I believe they are far greater in number) are less vocal than the few who have no problems.

To Ram "Where else can you see such dumbass, idiotic, stupid moderators rather than in America? These americans have somuch stuff up in their ass that they seem not to differentiate between hate speech vs free speech."
Interesting that Ram would make such comments. Now he's not a racist, but those who make similar comments about India or things that come from India are raving racists. Someone needs to look in the mirror before flinging angry darts of racism all over the place.
Please guys, let's stop this nonsense about racism.

BTW, I really had high hopes for the Adam and I was hoping to snag one, but I'll hold off for now and let the dust settle and will compare it to the Xoom when it's released. I hope the Adam does well. I love the long battery life, the screen that's readable in sunlight and the numerous ports. But they really need to reform their refund policy and find a way to run things much more smoothly. I'm rooting for Notion ink.

there are AFAICS three main factors at play:

Expectations were very high, which means disappointment was to be expected.

Criticism was strong and often vituperative, which contributes to a fault-finding environment.

Notion Ink is a young company trying to develop something more or less completely new, so some degree of failure is to be expected -- but hardly anybody takes account of that. (What was the failure rate for new Apple ][s?)

I'll agree with the critics that people were being naive to expect so much from a startup. But those critics (and I'm looking in particular at John Biggs and his cronies at CrunchGear) are doing great disservice to the cause of innovation by heaping scorn on hopeful Adamites.

as I've said elsewhere, I'm much more interested in what the guys at XDA have to say. I just set up a google alert so I can see when they start physically disassembling the boxes and weighing in on the build quality. (They'll probably be a bit biased, though, since it seems it was essentially created to be rooted.)

How many units have been sold? Maybe 50? Is it impossible to make a quality control before the deliveries for this quantity? What will happen with a bigger quantity?
I have been following this product since long time, but having a look the lack of information, some unfair contract terms, any reply from NI to all important questions made in the blog, to charge the money two month before the deliveries, the tablet includes only american plug in spite of the unit was purchased from an european guy, NI promised a matte glass and after the units were paid this one become into a glossy glass with a matte screen protector, the manual is not in the language of the consumer's country (compulsory in Europe). Well, several unreliable promises done.

My suggestion is to report all the problems to the Consumers Affair Agency in case NI doesn't respond to their responsibilities.

GPS signal may not be good inside house, he may need to take it outside to get a proper reception. There might be some brightness settings to improve pixel qi and also I remember Rohan saying that they have written some code to adjust the brightness accordng to ambient light, so the software update could improve it.

There is no evidence that he has applied the update and also there is no guarantee that he is not trying to defame the product by faking the touch response.

I can't convince you that either he is lame or he is an apple fan boy. I believe in the product and I will buy it, just because it is cheaper, fits my budget and will be better than any Chinese tablet.

Also can we see some pictures or a video of these problems?

why, because his unit wasnt working? and you cant trust him even though the video evidence and other notionaddict users have collaborated the same issues?

He has his unit in hand and the issues are evident but he doesnt know any better than you right? FYI he was following the instructions given to him on how to use the tablet per the new manual. The extremely brief manual says to two finger drag down on a panel to open the homepage. It didnt work, so thats obvious his stupidity and not the frustration with a nonworking tablet right?

the messed up gps and dim pq mode are also due to his stupidity too right?

I am not saying that software update will fix the screen issue. I agree that their screens look some what defective but they were under the impression that Pixel Qi is best of both worlds which it is not. Many people who have lesser expectations are satisfied with it. That is my point.

Lot of people are saying that update has really improved the performance.
Mada really looked dumb while reviewing his unit on the video, so I don't believe in him.

cut the bs. how is a software update going to solve a screen defect? and further more, mada did apply the update and still suffers force closes and unresponsiveness.

why are you blaming their screen defects on their expectations?

dont drag in other companies to make NI look like some grassroot savior from exploitive capitalistic pigs either. This has nothing to do with anyone other than notion ink.

By your sensitivity it seems like it should have been called that.

Now, as for the post, It seems to me that the poster shouldn't have specifically pointed to India as almost all marketing that I know off hypes things up whether it works or not. Microsoft being a prime example especially in the early days.

When your expectation are so high on Pixel Qi, you are bound to get disappointed. May be their pixel qi's are defective but this is what happened to Mada and Rambler. To add to that they didn't apply the update, they are also not familiar with the device/Eden, and don't know how to apply settings.

I am not saying Adam is perfect, it is far away from it. But it is a decent device for that price. It should be encouraged to cut down the capitalists like Apple, etc.

Hi Chris,
I am a NI customer waiting for my PQ 3G Adam to be shipped on Jan29th. I have been following the NI blog for quite a long time. Their concept is good, the hardware spec excellent and software being based on Android, quite promising. And coupled with the fact that the NI team seemed to be passionate about their product and that I had Rs 30,000/- to spare, made me pre-order one. And being an early adopter without any solid reviews/hands-on experience and the company bearing no big label backing, I knew what I was getting into. So when I get my hardware, if I see issues (hopefully with only software), I know I have to be patient and work with the big NI community that is around and sort out issues. I am willing to do that.

Most of the people who had pre-ordered have been following this product for quite some time, so they too would probably be sharing my attitude towards Adam. This is a start-up of a unique kind and I believe they should be given some more time to prove themselves. However as they had shown how to conceptualize and get a product manufactured, they should also be smart and quick in alleviating all customer grievances at the earliest. If they have come so far (with all the investor issues, pre-order gaffs, etc) and still deliver a product which mostly has lived upto the expectations, at least ergonomics/hardware wise (I know there have been quite a few disappointments around as far as software and few issues on defective parts), they could go ahead and address issues in a competitive manner as well. I hope all the defective products that got shipped get replaced/refunded with minimum fuss as that would be the correct thing.

I have had a number of bad experiences with products from established brands reaching me in defective conditions, or developing issues within the first few days. Also even the customer services of big brands have at times been quite disappointing.

So Adam, which saw the light only during CES and is from a company which is a startup with no big backings as of now, should be given a bit of time to iron out the issues and I hope then to succeed in the near future.

Rohan, if you happen to read this, I hope you make this happen for people who are passionate about technology and prefer to walk the less travelled road.

Chris, when Slashgear gets its Adam (I believe you guys have ordered one too), please do make sure that you give a neutral review without comparing to what others have reported. And as we all by now know that the update is very critical to the first batch of Adams to perform satisfactorily, please see if you could break down your review to pre-updated and post-updated Adam.

Hi Chris,
I am a NI customer waiting for my PQ 3G Adam to be shipped on Jan29th.

Thanks,
Arun

They "opened that box" when they offered to accept returns on defective units in there T&C. Besides NI has in their T&C that they will inspect the unit upon return, so if people do start sending adams back for "obscure" reasons NI reserved the right to bill them for shipping and to reduce their refund.

Again it is nice that people are having fun with their non defective units but that doesn't help how NI deals with defective units despite their T&C. Adam isn't being questioned here, its NI's integrity on taking back defective units.

Agreed, this is a start-up, and as such it should be understood that there will be issues with the first set of devices. There is a reason that only those who have been following the company would be eligible to order.
I know from personal experience the hassles of having a defective screen, and it doesn't just apply to Notion Ink.
I has ordered a new laptop from HP about a year ago, and from the moment it arrived, things went down hill. Pretty much DOA. I sent in the laptop for repair, and when I got it back close to three weeks later the computer seemed fixed... but there was a crack in the corner of my screen. I called customer support and was informed that "user damage" was not covered in my warranty... Would cast 500 dollars to replace.. I got it sorted after calling multiple times, and finally getting in touch with the Regional Sales Rep. Had to send the laptop in again...
So take it with a grain of salt, but these things happen pretty much everywhere.

cosmic,
I am not saying mada & rambler have obscure reasons. What i am saying is that if they open that box, others may show obscure reasons to return.
There is inherent risk and possible delays in resolving issues. They just got device just 2 days back..and it is first time that the company is seeing responses back from consumers...while it is huge disappointment for not being able to play with tablet as planned..it is not end of world..
If it is an established retailer it is a different story. At this point of time, it is like purchasing furniture online. It normally takes 2 to 3 months to resolve any damage to furniture..after many calls and e-mails. Why, because less quantities makes the decision process slow.
I would only hope that they find a way to satisfy these effected users evenwhile not opening flood gates to 'satisfaction' related complaints(to avoid restock/tepack fees)

I wouldn't have this much inclined to give some benefit of doubt to NI, hadn't i seen the videos where people are able to fairly work well with their units.
