I just signed on to say how much I love K-9. I have several Android devices and K-9 is one of the first apps I download. BTW, I would be willing to pay for K-9 as well.

I also admire your maturity and attitude about this whole situation. It is a refreshing change from the “angry” attitude that seems prevalent in the world today.

All we are seeking from a blog that tries to be a news report is a shred of credibility. Nothing more. SG does not owe anything to anybody but they alone know thier agenda and thier truthfulness. That introspection alone, we question.

Not this instance of desire for aN acknowledgement of K-9 which as a product itself is a fork of Googles original mail client.

Once you extract the system.img you have all of there apps they supplied in the bootrom update.

Open source doesn’t just mean access to the source code. The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale. (Leave alone an acknowledgement).

As in the great philosophy from your proud country.. In some ways this is “Karma Yoga” wherein as an open source developer you do it for the pur joy. Not for any return or gains except the betterment of the code or application and the joy of users :)

And as of NI contributing back, I think you are just pre-judging much earlier than expected. How do we know they have not ?

Secondly, even if the license (may or) may not enforce attribution, for any business that drinks from the FOSS fountain (cue analogy going horribly wrong), it becomes their moral responsibility to tend to the well as well (see?). NID should set the example here, just as Jesse has done, and I think opening up the Eden source code should be the Right Thing to do as well.

Now, about this damage Slashgear has unwittingly done again, how do we undo it? The article is being twitted and linked all over, but no one will think about twitting your clarification.

I’ve been doing opensource for a long, long time. Some of the stuff I’ve released is under a license that wouldn’t allow a debranded fork. There were many reasons I didn’t choose such a license for K-9.

So what is Open Source code ? Can I use it or should I ask somebody before I can use ? As someone who follow Adam and NI and as someone who believe that NI does it differently, I too like Jessie bummed a bit that NI could have been a little more public in acknowledging the contributio, inspiration or anything you wish to call this.

Other than that there is nothing more here. Why do you want NI to fail ? Why do you want Adam to disappear ?

Either way…..Rohan should speak to it….that’s just how FOSS rolls.

As Slashgear’s post mentions, It’s important to note that Notion Ink doesn’t appear to have violated K-9′s license. (Apache2). While I’m bummed out that they appear to have forked and released without engaging with the K-9 community, I don’t believe that they’ve done anything illegal or even particularly “wrong”.

I’m flattered that they considered K-9 good enough to use as the basis of their client and have reached out to them to see if we can work together in the future to improve both K-9 and Mail’d.
