If its just about reading/annotating in ebook mode, you might want to look at the iRex Digital Reader. 10" might be a bit expensive but they recently released an 8". For academia though, you tend to read a lot of two-column A4, so I opted for the 10" Kindle DX and am quite happy with it. This technology is indeed what all academia is hoping for, no more printing several pdfs a week. Might have to sell it once the Adam is available, buts its certainly worth it...

Thanks for covering this. It is definitely disappointing that they didn't have anything substantial to announce or show at MWC. Marketing is absolutely key to the Adam's success.

I agree with the previous poster regarding some kind of stylus input. If they were able to implement this somehow (whether with a capacitive stylus or some kind of Wacom input), it would be an ideal device for College students. Being able to read textbooks and pdfs in the low-power BW reflective mode as well as marking them up with handwritten annotations is something no one else is offering in this convenient size and form factor. Without annotation, this will not appeal as broadly to the academic/student market.

I am from India and the info circulation here is that it will be priced around 15,000 INR in India that's around 300 $. That's jolly good as an iphone here costs around 600 $.

The final price in US is still largely a mystery but it will surely be within 300-450 $. This I can be certainly sure about.

Q3 is Q3, unfortunately - quite probably NI don't know exactly when the Adam will be ready during that three month period, and won't until closer to the time. That's not unusual, even for large companies; it's very dependent on external factors like federal approval, wireless approval, production schedules, etc.

As for pricing, again, we don't know anything more than the rumored scale. As far as we know there'll be two versions, one with Pixel Qi and one with LCD, the latter being the cheaper and thinner model. Anything beyond that is unconfirmed.

i'm totally disappointed that the mwc hasn't brought up new revealing infos about the adam. the only interesting recent info was that there will be 2 versions of it.

i've got 2 questions:

1. does anybody know what q3 will really mean? if i'm not wrong that can be anytime between july and september

2. no real info about the pricing yet. i've heard somewhere between 300-800 dollar, but does anybody know anything more specific. and will there be 2 versions or many more (like the ipad) with different equipment like gps, 3p, storage differences?

Interesting news about the LCD alternative. Good job asking them about that once more..

I was hoping for a wacom tablet, but it still looks like a great piece of engineering.

I agree it's disappointing, we would've loved to have seen some closer-to-production hardware at the show. I hope you're not right, and that this doesn't impact upon them - and the Adam's release - too heavily.

What's worth remembering is that Notion Ink are a small start-up, and it's a pretty big challenge to develop in effect two tablets with a new chipset and various high-profile hardware partners. When you start dealing with things like that - and then factor in negotiating time with carriers - it's easy to under-estimate how long some of this stuff will actually take. They could still make an appearance at CeBIT, of course, which tends to be a more tablet/netbook focused event anyway rather than MWC's phone focus. That's less than a month away.

I've got to say I'm totally bummed about the lack of Adam updates at MWC. It seems like most of what we know now we already knew after CES. I'm willing to bet the lack of a working prototype this week is going to hurt the product - this was a great opportunity to gain to gain traction against the unreleased iPad. It seems like neither pricing nor a release date are fixed and I'm personally hoping that the release does not slip into oblivion. With CES and MWC (almost) behind I'm not sure when Notion Ink will have next have such a great opportunity to highlight their product. Once the iPad comes out the potential market share is going to shrink substantially....
