It has no problem for what they do about their devices, but don’t say something to misdirect people. Why don’t they tell the truth upfront? If they just tell everyone the outside screen is glossy, they would charge the pre order money, the devices are not ready until the REAL date, then all the problem solved. Their business style just cannot earn any respect in my eye.

What competing devices do you speak of? There does not exist one today. And when there is, it will likely cost more, have less features, and be made by a mega corporation. Those same mega corporations have fcc people in their pocket, and long lines of steady suppliers. If you enjoy anything tech at all, you would love the fact that a little company is trying to take on those corporations. By creating competition in this market segment we are all winning. Well, now that the Adam is arriving in peoples’ houses, with a glossy screen requiring a difficult-to-apply matte screen protector, perhaps I could receive some credit for an astute post? Don’t believe everything you read — yes, I agree. But sometimes it’s true.

Listen, I want adam to be GREAT. I pre-ordered one, and hope it will be awesome. I’m also a bit frustrated with the way it’s being unrolled.

***trying to explain the matte glass setup of adam.*** Adam has 02 layers of glass setup in a way so that it can give you smooth and scratch resistance top-layer for better color and usability along with a matte layer beneath to cut hard reflection/surface gloss. Explanation : when light fall/hit on top smooth surface you see less reflection because of beneath matte layer don’t let light reflect it (hence cut the hard reflection/surface gloss). matte surface (in-side smooth;top side matte) | | smooth surface——– ||> || —–smooth surface ||> || ||> || ||> || ||> || ||> || ||> || now if you understood the above setup. carefully see the official un-boxing pics you can see more hard reflection/surface gloss on bezel then on screen; the reason being is… on bezel the “sandwich matte layer” is not there ..”sandwich matte layer” only covers the lcd’s 10.1 inch area. @Rohan am i correct…? : )

Guys it is unrealistic to expect a Rolls Royce for a price of Skoda. What Notion Ink and Rohan have done here is, they tried to put together a product for a reasonable price. Don’t expect to get state-of-the art LCD / Pixel Qi screens, which are fingerprint free, glare free, smudge free and at the same time display great colours and can be used outdoors. The companies like Apple, Samsung, Motorola …. had gone through numerous iterations in their product cycles to reach the stage they are at right now. Adam’s USP lies in the care taken by NI to make the user experience (read UI) as pleasant as possible using just a mobile operating platform. Give them time and in a couple of product cycles, they will refine adam to a level, which will be great for mainstream usage.

Viewsonic is supposed to have a horrible screen, but it does have Tegra 2 and 512 MB RAM so should be upgradeable to Honeycomb unless Google places restriction on screen resolution. Initial UI was horrible, but Dec 27th update apparently fixed most issues. Archos 101 Home Terminal is supposed to come out with dual core cortex processor and thus should be upgradeable to Honeycomb (101 internet tablet not due to single core processor), Things should get interesting in 2 months. Personally, I really like the Adam, but the Playbook was also very impressive.

Stewart, why is launching a tablet with Froyo stupid? They improved upon Froyo. So you don’t have the shortcomings of it. Seems smart to me. Also, you can download the apps from the web and install them on Adam. Having the market would be great. But it’s not necessary. You also realize that if it gets Honeycomb it will get market access? You mention it as two separate things. But, the only reason Adam doesn’t come with market access is Google. Google is supposed to allow it on Honeycomb. Therefore, if Adam gets Honeycomb, it will get market access.

Dear Rohan,
I realize now the mistake I have made. Signing up for a pre order notification is one thing but actually paying money for a product I never even seen in person was a mistake. I should have waited. The more hands on videos see and tech blog articles I read the more aprehensive I become.
If possible can I please cancel my pre order for a refund? I’m happy to pay for any administrative costs involved in canceling my order.

People who use pre-order always are at risk of not knowing all aspects of device while they would have a benefit of experiencing the device early than others.
Some times too much info is harmful/
For normal users what matters is, does the screen provides proper resolution, and how scratch resistent it is (assuming that a screen protector is used. Best of the best screens would spoil anyway if it is exposed to scratches. Now a company CEO would always tries to sell it as best screen as long as the screen is as good as rest of the screens in the market (or even a bit less than the best ones in the market).
Coming to half-truths..All do it. It is just that Rohan has to learn how western companies do it. AT&T says ‘fewest dropped calls than any other network;((citing some survey) but the reality is it is much poorer in coverage and reliability than Verizion. Does your cell phone really stay charged for the nuber of hours the vendor says? Does companies provide online fecility to cancel accounts. Some times it takes long time to find out who to call for cancellation. On automatic systems, if you choose cancel option, your wait time would be 15 or more minutes , if you choose sales, you will get the person immidiately. NI definitely does not have experience in selling the way American companies do. Consumers in US are almost got trained to be decieved in a particular way. Talk about AOL. At some point of time they tried to sell me a packake when i tried to change to new provide. “you can go with your new internet provider. But for just 14.99, you get to keep your e-mail, and access to AOL portal info” (sorry for digressing here to marketing cultures of companies).’

It seems you rushed a bit here. You can talk about how good/bad the product is in reality so that users can make a decision. For eg: get more information on the screen(not express doubts), or do a field test of the screen and say if it is good or not. That has more weitage than trying to look spec sheet and blogs in microscope. So what would you have done, if the spec says simply ‘ scratch resistent, glare-free, crystal clear LCD screen’. You can’t question anymore than actually experiencing the device right? Unfortunately consumers that kind of text .. Rohan trying something different. Not sure if it would work or not. Let us see.
I see no problem if the product goes through hands on reviews and give appropriate rating to it (on all aspects). I have no problem if pre-prdered people like me gets disappointed with some things (for eg. any lag etc) since we jumped based on some opinion formed of the product. But what i don’t understand is some people thrashing a startup for no reason. They neither pre-prdered, nor experienced the product. And they don’t have specific criticism about a particular thing seens in demo videos. Their criticism is like Rohan owes them a lot in his last life ..:-)
Expecting more hands-on demos/tests from you in the coming weeks :-)

Agreed that the NI HQ is in Bangalore … but it is a true global company from all other perspective . All the HW & logistics and key designing is not in India ( a good part coming from US & Chine). Indian don’e have any price or speed advantage in buying an adam. So please lets not get into Nationalism . Savor the game of gen-Y companies as they battle it out with the Empire .

Hello Chris,
The link you have provided above in this sentence – ” According to Notion Ink’s “Design” page, the Adam tablet’s screen is “made of pure matte glass”; however, according to company emails to pre-order customers” – is not a link to Notion Ink or direct link to the company’s email.
It is a link to a private individual’s posting on an independent site. Rather anecdotal don’t you think?
However, it’s good the company has again, as a result of this discussion, clarified ““Adam comes with 2 layers of Matte Surfaces, one on the PQ LCD screen, other through the Matte Screen protector on the outside Glass.”

Can you confirm for us that the scratch resistant glass layer is indeed the top (touch) layer and not the screen protector or the lcd panel layer? And can you also confirm that its glossy or matte? “Low in gloss” is very ambiguous and liliputing has stated that the panel itself is glossy in their hands on.
