We'll see how long it takes to get rooted and allow those APK files to load. Sort of sad that the Kindle Fire allows sideloading of apps. Really, I'm buying this as hardware, but the way B&N is treating their buyers makes me LESS inclined to actually be a B&N customer and buy content from them. I'll just hack it and use it for everyone else's content. I've honestly been tempted to cancel my order and get a Kindle. But since this is commodity hardware from which I plan to wipe the B&N ecosystem, it's the better choice because it's better hardware.

I think it will still be a hit for modders and casual users alike.
I own the NC and it has been great. The stock rom was fine for casual use and would be fine for most users, especially now that they have included Hulu, Netflix, and the like.
Modders can easily hack CM onto it (with CM9 due for January) and get the full tablet experience if they want. It's starting to be a moderately average price for a tablet (times have certainly changed) but should still be quite a good device.
