It's certainly possible. The odd thing is the question of why Nokia would then effectively torpedo the Symbian Foundation if they were going to transition anyway?

I suppose it could be that they want control of that transition.

I'm usually a corporate cynic on this, so my thoughts are that maybe Meego sucked at the end, but partially because Elop torpedoed it. But my thoughts go further to say that the board of directors didn't care if he sank Meego because they brought him in for his corporate ties to Microsoft and to devise the strategy to move Nokia away as a software company, especially since they really started to suck as a software company. They probably made that decision when they announced that Symbian^3 was going to be late. That was probably the last straw for the board and all of the Symbian partners. I could imagine SE and Samsung fuming over this as they had no control on when they could release their phones, and the board being pissed because their core software strategy just got delayed again. And then that's when all the rumors about OPK's departure started swirling. And then shortly after Samsumg and SE pulled all support for Symbian.

Hmm...

I'm still struggling with the mothballing of MeeGo and Symbian - not because of Symbian getting made EOL, that was always going to happen over the next two or so years, but the dropping of Qt and MeeGo which would have provided a smooth transition for customers and developers.

This made sense - sure, it would take time but then so will this and if Nokia had stuck to their schedule of making the S^3 UI a bit more pretty then it was still viable.

Unless...

Suppose MeeGo is rotten? Suppose that it just isn't up to snuff and there are just too many technical issues with it to resolve in two years? Where does that leave Nokia? There's no longer a clear transition and Symbian has a shelf life of three years maximum. All they can do is look to partner with someone.

Perhaps this isn't a bad move - going with Google would give short term success but that wouldn't be a partnership, it would be a domination with all the service revenue going out the door. Apple, RIM and HP are all closed so that really on left Windows Phone as a suitor. There weren't any other options.

But...

Elop could be playing his cards a lot closer to his chest than we think. Nokia are still developing for MeeGo and it wouldn't surprise me if they sever links with Intel and take it back in house (as Maemo) and work on that as a future platform, getting it right and then gradually introducing and refining it in the same way as Samsung have done with Bada.

This is a long term game and Elop may have actually played a blinder here.

Did the Nokia board agree for the CEO to make a statement of distrust in *current* Nokia devices, while appreciating Nokia's competitors? Has that *ever* happened in the history of any company?

Did the Nokia board approve to declare *the whole production of Nokia smartphone* end-of-life, when there are no WP7 phones to replace them? What fool would buy a Nokia smartphone starting from tomorrow, until WP7 phones arrive? What fool would develop for a Nokia platform, knowing that it will soon be killed and there is no migration path to WP7?

Come on, they're undefendable.

It wasnt board approved. I imagine the board is pretty unhappy right now. They cant get rid of Elop because that would make the company look poorly managed and be ruinous to the stock this shortly after hiring him, but they undoubtedly can see that they made a mistake in choosing him. He could still prove himself, I can see a single path that would ultimately be good for Nokia, (investing extremely heavily in MeeGo behind the scenes and make that "one device" a 2nd gen Medfield, 1+gig of ram, next generation clear black display, 12 MP optical zoom camera, pentaband radio, real wifi, fm transmitter/reciever, PicoP projector, free tethering, etc) in other words their high end iphone challenger. If MeeGo storms the high end market, it will eventually trickle down giving Nokia the market again, while WP7 holds there market share until that happens.

If they were going to do that, Nokia would have said that MeeGo was going to be invested in as a high end operating system, but they did not.

How long until WP7 gets multitasking for third party apps? A customisable UI? App sideloading? Working microSD support?! It's a half-finished OS based on the Microsoft philosophy, a philosophy I have opposed for as long as I've had any interest in technology. It is a poor re-interpretation of the things that have made Apple successful (gee, sounds like something else Microsoft makes...) and ultimately, I want no part of it. Both Android and WebOS are more feature complete, more ready, and more honest-to-god open than anything Microsoft is doing, and if Nokia is partnering with Microsoft, then I no longer see a need to support Nokia.

WP7 will have copy/paste soon, though. I don't know what's going on with MeeGo, but if they're only up to speed to get *one* device out this year then there has to be something happening - or not happening - with the platform. Taking into account that the plan is to reuse hardware intended for MeeGo for WP, then it seems the issue isn't one of devices but of the software itself.

We don't know enough to say, though, but for the Nokia board to agree that in effect marginalising MeeGo back to the labs and adopting a third-party platform is the best plan of attack, there has to be some pretty significant issues with it.

I don’t know what’s going on with MeeGo, but if they’re only up to speed to get *one* device out this year then there has to be something happening – or not happening – with the platform. Taking into account that the plan is to reuse hardware intended for MeeGo for WP, then it seems the issue isn’t one of devices but of the software itself.

We don’t know enough to say, though, but for the Nokia board to agree that in effect marginalising MeeGo back to the labs and adopting a third-party platform is the best plan of attack, there has to be some pretty significant issues with it.

Why is it so difficult to consider MeeGo? Why wouldn't it be possible to have MeeGo ready until 2012, when the Windows devices are planned? How is WP7 any better without elementary functions such as copy/paste?

Not that I will be buying a Nokia phone, but what choice did they have? Symbian is old, MeeGo is years out, everyone has Android out. MS is the only choice and they have a few bucks to throw Nokia's way for development and marketing.

Another bad decision. They are talking about the year of 2012 and whats the world is going to be look like?! They make change too SLOW just like another MeeGo project. I am sick of keep waiting their new product while their competitor has new updates almost every week.

Here's all I need to know. They're making Windows Phone 7 devices, a closed platform with fewer features than its open competitors. They're forcibly relegating MeeGo to the same niche that Maemo sat in, rather than taking what they've learned and running with it. Based on that, I know I no longer need to consider Nokia phones when I purchase my next smartphone. The big question for me now is, should I pick up an Android phone, or a WebOS phone?
