There is a way out of this though: Nokia’s board mustering balls to fire Stephen Elop and at the same time, scale down it’s partnership with Microsoft. Nokia can continue to produce WP7/WP8 phones, but only one or two devices every year, just like Samsung and HTC. No more playing the preferred and/or exclusive Windows Phone OEM role.

There is a second strategy: do badly and have Nokia’s high-end smartphone business bought over by Microsoft.

Maybe that was the original plan all along, when Elop was hired as CEO and started the ‘burning platform’ nonsense.

Admit it, all you Microsoft astroturfers and shills, the WP7 is an abysmal failure, kept afloat only by Ballmer’s visionless obstinacy and Redmond’s money-throwing. When WP7 first came out you said, ‘wait for Mango’. Now Mango is out you say ‘wait for Apollo’.

No matter how long you wait, Windows Phone will never get a double digit % market share.

Poor Nokia, dooming itself by partnering a company with successes such as Windows Vista, Windows Vista, KIN, Zune and Bob.

Killing not ditching. Elop may go down in history as one of the worst CEOs ever. His only chance is to pull off a miracle recovery with Windows Phone. At the moment this seems unlikely.
Elop kille Symbian outright the 11 February 2011 by declaring it dead. He killed the N9 by stating that no follow up phone will be made regardless if how successful it is sales wise. Nokia share holders should sue him for negligence.

Are you sure about that? I have spent extensive time with it and zero lag. As far as UI being an afterthought hahaha. It is much better designed. People are all different and want greater levels of customization than 8 squares on their screen.

New, animated and scrolling widgets present information without even opening the app. Live tiles don’t even come close.

Wow! Way off. 1% of android devices yes and it has been out for three months and the source wasn’t released until two months ago so it really isn’t that bad if you think about it. WP has zero customizations and still has problems with their updates. Verizon focus owners haven’t even fully finished updating to mango yet and how long has that been out?

I will admit the apps in WP do look good but the tile interface is ugly as hell. And, for the record, the design language of apps updated for ICS actually looks quite good. If you actually think ICS is a WP clone you are dreaming. When MS produces a full scale smartphone OS that can actually hold a candle to androids capabilities you can comment.

Mango contains fake multitasking, slower browser, crappy bing everywhere, no NFC support, no Wifi direct support, no tablet support, limited hardware support, less features in the camera (panorama mode, view filters), smaller app market missing a lot of the big players, weaker on cloud integration, apps cost money that are free on android, less customization, less independent developer support, still requires desktop software, no flash (although this will be nothing soon anyways), Turn by turn text-to-speech navigation with offline support, Support for third party keyboards, support for third party browsers, Sharing options for video (MMS, Facebook, Twitter, Skydrive, etc) , landscape options for homescreen, Smart dial to make dialing faster, etc…….

I can go on but there isn’t a single feature that WP has that android doesn’t.

For the record, Duarte worked for Danger which got bought by microsoft, he did not work for microsoft. He went on to work for palm and now he is back working with everyone from danger on…….Android! Andy Rubin was one of the founders of danger. I love how people try to say ICS copies metro but other than calling their contacts app people, this isn’t the slightest bit true.

Look at it the other way. Bing Vision? Sound familiar? Smells like google goggles to me.

The Nokia N9 is just showing to people how things are really messed up at Nokia,because how many companies produce there best product an then do not let it be sold Globally to boost the companies Sales an Portfoli,Mr Elop more bothered about helping is old Employees Microsoft Investing in Nokia to chose Windows,but Windows in Europe is to Restricted for people who have been used to Nokia Symbian phones,as you lose most of the Function with Windows,Android is more like using a Symbian phone,as i have the N8 an switched to Galaxy S2 an most of the things i could do with the N8 i can still do on the Galaxy S2 but with the Lumia 800 i couldn”t do none as Windows is to Restricted for me

He, not even close. Id first like to point out that its only available on 1% of Android devices and has been available how long? Pathetic. Second the UI of ICS isnt even close to matching the beauty of Metro (more than just the tiles) the moment you open an app your transported back in time when designers didnt exist and everyone tried to make their apps as ugly as possible. WP7 design language completely decimates ICS’ clone language (Matias the former Microsoft employee trying to copy Metro but failing)

The other manufacturers are still making windows phones even if their android devices are selling better. The thing that will kill Nokia is that Windows phone, even with MS’s “special” allowances to Nokia, has virtually zero customization beyond the colour of the tiles.

It is a shame because I think the lumias are really nice hardware. A Lumia 900 running Ice cream sandwich would be amazing. Better specs would be necessary though because of a more demanding platform with TRUE multitasking.

What they are not pointing out is that they have the three focus areas,
1.Smartphones, This, according to Elop, is WP and nothing but WP.
2. “Next Billion”. This is the de facto Plan B. Line between smartphone and featurephone _will_ disappear. Nokia’s plans here include Meltemi with roots in Maemo and MeeGo, smartphone platforms by any standard. They also bought Smarterphone, a small company that tries to make featurephone OS “smarter”, this should be interesting.
3. Future disruptions, You won’t see anything from here in few years, they aim for 3 ~ 10 years from now.

How a bad plan can ever success ? This remember me the Microsoft claim back in 1995 that the Internet will soon be obsoleted by the MSN. Samsung + Google is a such powerful association that even Apple will lost market parts in the coming years.

That’s speculation at best! The Nexus S/S 4G seem to have little problems running ICS. It can be done with properly written software. You lose.

If they would use Android, they would have to compete with Samsung, HTC and others already in the pretty crowded Android handset market. In Windows Phone they have virtually no competition because the other manufacturers are way too focused on Android and don’t make flagship Windows Phones.
With Windows Phone, Nokia is able to differentiate. I think it is a great move and with the coming Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 integration it would be really awesome.

That’s too bad that Nokia wants to stick with Windows OS. They don’t even realize how powerfull they are. Nokia uses to rime with “good quality”, and it’s still for a lot of people. But there OS is not up to date, not because of the OS but because of its lack of apps. So if Nokia had shift to Android, I’m pretty sure they would have a great success because a lot people still remember the built quality of the first Nokia phones (3210, 8810 etc.), and they’ll be pleased to buy a Nokia Phone with Android. Windows Phone is great but, to win the smartphone challenge, you have to compete with an OS that can offer what most of people wants : tons of apps. And only Android or iOS can do that for now.

I have a very cheap Android phone (for testing apps I need sth slow, haha – I write games like Memory Owl HD) and while it’s not very good it’s still much, much better than any Symbian phone I had or saw.
