first off nokia has stopped making meego devices...or have they? rumours say other wise.
second it is a true open source OS unlike all others, does not matter if it is unsupported by its manufacturer it will continue to have development. see n900 and you will understand what a true development community does with a great phone and for how long. eventually someone is going to find a way to port android apps to meego hopefully before people make the mistake of porting the finished version of android os.

I am not sure if I agree that "available" apps are like features of a car. They are more like accessories that you can buy or pick up for free.

Features of a car is what is included in the package you purchased. If that is the analogy, N9 will win compared to most other so called smart phones because it comes with all necessary apps built in.

It's multi taking is amazing as well. In an iOS or Android, most people don't even know how to tell if an app is already open or closed or even how to close them. They just click an app, when done, click on the home button again. They think the app is closed.

What about access to the filesystem. Would you use Windows PC if they take away Windows Explorer/My Computer?

And of course the iTunes. How crazy and stupid is that? I want to see my music and videos organized in a folder structure with the same file names as when I created?

Well to solve these and many more issues, you maybe able to come up with apps, but on N9, it is all built in.

Just simple.

Did you not get the memo? Its apparently all about ecosystems now.

N9 runs Harmattan, not Meego, although admittedly the distinction is minor. Harmattan can be seen to be a UX as much as an OS, in its current form on the N9, Nokia will support it with updates for at least 3years, weve already had an update, PR1.2 is being finalised and PR1.3 is in the works.

Beyond that you have a huge community push bringing apps and bug fixes. Nokia is working on the new S40 which will run Qt layers and apps like the N9, reportedly with the same swipe UI.

Nokia may be investing WP7 but they need Qt too, its the basis for future platforms, so your app invest is safe for now and it wont suddenly stop working just because Elop says the N9 isnt the chosen one. Enjoy it now and in 12-18 months see what Meltemi brings.

I really think people gave the N9 much better reviews than they would have if Nokia hadn't already killed it to go with WP7. The UI is nice, but performance is balky (fixed somewhat with the latest update), and Nokia couldn't compete with Apple, Google, or even Microsoft on apps and cloud services. But everyone swooned over the N9 almost nostalgically as "what might have been."

The industrial design is stunning, but you can get nearly the same design with the Lumia 800. I have both, and it can be hard to tell them apart.

I like your car analogy. Let's run with it: would you buy a car that can't drive on most of the roads out there, and won't be able to drive on any new roads built after you buy it? What if you were buying it in a relatively undeveloped country where new roads were being built all the time?

It's NOT just a phone. A high end smartphone is a computing platform for apps, cloud services and content that also makes phone calls. If you want something that just makes calls, you don't need an N9, you can get an 1101.

Rofl, you do understand that available apps and functionality are like features of a car, TV or mp3 player right? And phones are expensive as shit, at least for a person like me with a family to support. Whats wrong with wanting to get the mileage and functionality out of a device I buy?

If I have Android or Apple, app development will continue because devices developed with those OSes will continue to be made. When I would really like an app to make my life easier, find out its available for iOS and Android, and not for MeeGo, I'd kick myself for making that choice.

Many considerations go into a purchase. I'm sorry if none of these concern someone as wealthy as you, but I will most likely need to use this phone for the next 2/3 years. If its support drops, apps stop being made for it, etc. Then its basically like buying a car with a faulty transmission. It'll run for a while, but eventually I'll be shelling out money to fix it (aka buy a new phone).

Yup, thats a pretty good summary. Its sad that Android and Apple dominate the OS market. MeeGo had some great capabilities. Sadly I don't see the point in buying a handset that will be the first and last one of its kind, I somehow feel this will just limit its ability to interact with other systems, not to mention app development and other things. Ofcourse, I don't know how I feel about Windows Phone either.

One thing I do have to say is that I love Nokia's design. It is very clean cut and honestly both powerful and beautiful at the same time. The same could be said for their advertising, which is very cinematic and unique. Very different from iPhones, here is stuff you can ask your phone/user manual, and Motorola's, bad-asses of the future UNITE!. Samsungs new iPhone poke is pretty funny though. Design-wise, Nokias phones are also very different from Android and Apple phones. If I could throw Android on one of these I would probably buy one...
