Never gunna happen, see some of the threads at TMO and meego forum for an explanation why.
Doesn't spell the end for the platform anyway, would've been a boost, but it wouldn't have launched it into the stratosphere.

Not necessarily. Myriad want the Alien Dalvik runtime to come attached to apps (rather than as a standalone thing which you load APKs into), which would make more sense for average-user-friendliness.
Now, you're right that the Nokia/Ovi Store most likely won't start accepting APKs and wrapping them in Alien Dalvik for N9 users, but I can easily see e.g. the Amazon Appstore doing it

There are too many reasons for preferring a Meego Device than Android phone:

1) one is Nokia is good quality hareware. Beside, even it has same quantity of plastic, just one simple example can explain, why italian fashion cost more than Chinese cloth even they are using probably same material? people love Italian fashion, could be design reason, quality reason, and people chose Chinese cloth for price reason.

2) Meago runs Android app. could be a bad news for its competitors, but it is a good thing for app. developers, shouldn't they want their app. run on more than one OS?

3) the world is beautiful due to varieties, although there were very few people using Linux OS on PC, if linux fans hadn't inisisted, probably there wouldn't be today's Android's success, and Windows simulator on linux gave Linux fan chances to run more app. on PC, 1+1>2, very simple math. It is same principle for Meago running Droid app. The good thing about Linux is it is an open resource, there are hundreds of versions of Linux on PC, did you ever hear they were unhappy for app. share? So why should Linux base Droid worry same Linux base Meego share app.?

4)Many people have been using Nokia for more than a decade, some just love Nokia, they are just faithful to Nokia, maybe one day after 10 years, HTC will also have the same faithful consumer base, HTC has to be patient to wait for that day.

5) for someone who has already Droid, would like something more than just one Droid phone

ok, leave the rest to others

@twitter-106727848:disqus PhoneTipsAndTricks

haha I wish somebody was paying me 0.7 cents, I wasted way too much time on Slashgear last night. If you'd suspect anybody paying me for what I write, it would have to be someone else, since I'm mainly just rooting for more Linux based options on phones...

The Nokia E series has excellent build quality
A bunch of cheap Nokia phones are plasticky but also indestructable.

But N92/95/96 was pretty crummy, the case surface chipped like no tomorrow, the sliders were pretty unstable, most became very loose or even got stuck. And with the N96, Nokia was already starting to loose the plot.

I can't tell you how the sliders on HTC keyboard phones are, cause I never had one of those. But the Desire HD metal case is the best I've had to date. Not only sturdy, but the shape makes it very easy and pleasant to hold.

Either way, I'm perfectly happy with a good plastic built phone too,

I miss nothing with my SGS2. even though the battery door is paper thin, its fit is so precise, it doesn't give on pressure. There are ways to build very solid plastic phones.

My Pneumatic Hammer is plastic too, it could shield me from a hail of bullets if I could move it fast enough ;-)

I could apply the same logic about why you bothered replying to a 'hired opinion writer'. Is HTC paying you 0.7 cents?

Obviously HTC doesn't produce a device a week. That's an 'expression', not a literal fact, which I similarly remind my 9 year old. HTC is well known for quickly responding to market and churning out a great deal of handsets, and I take my hat off to them for that. In contrast, Nokia has gained a reputation for being slow to respond to market, but they do also churn out plenty of devices.

Both manufacturers (indeed, all manufacturers) will have their plastic fantastics, but lets put it another way - Lets lay out every phone ever made by each manufacturer, in order of build quality (subjective I know, but humour me). In percentage terms I firmly believe you would see many more truly good quality handsets from Nokia than from HTC.

All i'm saying is that I believe Nokia has a reputation for making better hardware than HTC. I've used enough HTCs to give my opion and that's all it is. And it's MY opinion. I don't write for anyone.

I'll admit that i've owned more Nokias than any other device, but I'm not a fanboy. In fact, they've lost my loyalty and I'm open minded regarding my the direction of my next phone purchase.

Laslty, my profile name is simply to draw attention to a website that I run. Not an attempt to convey false authority.

All the best...

don't you hate plunking down your hard earned for some device and then waiting and waiting for stuff to happen...

I do wish Henry12 was right, wouldn't that be nice!

I bet a MeeGo phone with an Apache stack would make a great little web server...

you seem to be talking without the slightest clue what HTC builds.

Well, we all know there's a lot of hired opinion writers lurking in the web, they get a request to write positively or negatively about something or other in forums and boards and blog comments and they get 0.7 cents a word or something, I forgot exactly what they said in the article the pay was, except that it wasn't very lucrative and you had to write a LOT to eek out a living.

So, since then, whenever i hear people say stuff that's patently untrue, like "HTC spitting out an Android device every week" and obviously oblivious to the fact that HTC more than anyone else is known for high quality cases, I think of that Article about the legions of anonymous hired opinion influencers.

If you're gonna make a complaint about HTC, I'll give you a hint: their cameras are usually mediocre, which is an area where Nokia has always been above average.

As for case quality, thanking of Nokia's N92/N95/N96 series, they were very plasticky, thick and not very durable, they chipped like no tomorrow, and the sliding mechanism was prone to getting very loose or even getting stuck.

Naming yourself "PhoneTipsAndTricks" would fit perfectly with the hired influencer, to give yourself some false authority while making uninformed statements.

But maybe you're just out of your depth and didn't mean any harm, who knows...

LOL you're joking, right? Last time I checked, the polycarbonate used in the N9 was also a plastic. Not to mention that you can get stunningly nice metal cases from HTC.

I'm rather happy with the plastic my SGS2 is made of. In the end, the best hardware inside is a lot more of a differentiator than one kind of plastic or another in the outer case. :P

But I can see buying a MeeGo phone over an Android phone if the specs are up to snuff.
If I can run a few Android apps on it to fill in, thanks to Myriad, all the better...

Hope Nokia's board keeps tight tabs on Elop, so he can't throw out the baby with the bath.

The possibility that he's a trojan horse hasn't gone away.

I thought myriad said a few months back that it won't be available to maemo/meego end-users.
Can't recall why exactly, but prolly has a lot to do with Nokia/Elop not allowing it :(

Actually its software on top of MeeGo allowing this to happen. Your talking like this is already built in the system especially since N900 users have been teased to have this for a long time. This is possible on MeeGo because theres a team dedicated to bring it. A Dev team like Myriad is possible only any platform as long they have the tools and a platform to work on like linux. Plus don't say this until you actually have the software on MeeGo i used to have a N900 wait around a year and half for this and it still didnt happen.

your question indicates you are already looking to buy a meego device- why else do you care ?

Read the article - IVI systems are consolidating around meego. Meego tablets are already on the market with potentially more on their way.

Android will only be a subset of the app environment on meego. On meego, you can program in QT/QML, C++ and most any language available on linux. So it is likely, at least in theory that with a richer dev platform, it is likely to attract more developers to it long term.
