im on t-mobile so the comparison i have to go with ids the google g2. i would pick this over the g2 because of the features. but im stuck on the fact that it doesnt have a keyboard like the g2. which in my case is more important over a camera because i have plenty of dlsr’s i shoot with. but the camera is very nice and all of its features.

after reading this article m going to buy Nokia N8 …. & i had 3 phones in mind 1st choie was samsung Galaxy S 2nd was iPhone & 3rd was N8 and i used each mobile for some hours and i found Nokia N8 best among the rest with every thing i need in ma phone… Usb onThe Go… HDMI…. 12MP cam… symbian^3… and the only thing that attracted me towards other 2 was the display rest everything i found in Nokia N8… n i’m that m gonna buy something worth buying :) & i found iphone the worst mobile phone among all high end phone at cost 800$ crap….

About the email App, the even though the device downloads the email it will sync with the server when you open the mail. So there is a delay in opening a mail, but in settings there is an option to set it off, Read status : sync to server, or don’t sync to server. when you select don’t sync to server the messages will be displayed as instantaneous as any other device’s email program. The major problem of Symbian is it allows too much of customization so a general user seems to be frustrated.

Hello,
I have problem with receiving calls with this type of phone (Nokia N8). There are a lot of this phones experiencing with this kind of problem in our operator . We are able to make a calls but is not possible to receive calls. Releasing is initiated from Mobile phone Nokia N8 and calls canceled . Is there any problem with this kind of phone,maybe is not registered our MCC for Mobile Terminating calls or any software problem. Please provide with info.

Found your review much more objective than others (especially BGR…). Thanks for your take, but I like the looks of the N8. I don’t mind the landscape keyboard as I find the portrait on Android and iPhone lead to errors (not to mention texting while people drive…). The “confusing” OS? Not so confusing to me… Any device takes getting used to, and I like options, widgets, etc. Better compared to Android devices than to the iPhone since you have no widgets or options on the iPhone. While the idevice is popular, I’m not following anyone off a tall building or short pier ;p Your mileage may vary :)

In fact!!! Nokia shows N8 very honestly, with its slight hickups and all. Some slight slow downs don’t matter at all. And those who pays 700$ just for absolutely smooth menu navigation experience, N8 is going to fix those slight kinks via firmware updates. Nokia is well respected company for its support to even old phones, but this is their most important phone in a while. And those slight, meaningles bumbs in performance don’t make this any less essential choice for those who need those things that only N8 delivers.

I’ so sorry to become a Nokia N8 owner…. Beside slow response on application, it’s also hang and frozen…. This is not I’m expecting from multimedia and multi tasking mobile phone.
Contact Nokia Care Centre and they ask me to bring the phone for inspections…. btw do they know whole world complaint about ‘freeze’ syndrome of Nokia N8?
Maybe advert show ‘fast’ performance of Nokia N8 but for me owned this Nokia N8 is really ‘nightmare’…..

Yeah, keep parroting that iHegemony BS. N8 is not like old symbian phones, even though american Apple friendly media would like to insist so. N8 is very fluent and fast modern smart phone, and every phone has rather similar menu structure with identical UI’s. It does not matter if it looks like old symbians. The thing here is that its the first touchscreen Symbian phone to have powerfull GPU. Get over with the N97 disapontment. This is nothing like that.

But unlike some phones, the smooth ui is not everything N8 has to offer. N8 easily beats every phone there is with its camera. Its excellent musicplayer and its sound quality is awesome, and it also has a radio. It has a GPS. etc. etc. Whats with american medias fixation with the smoothest ui experience possible!? This is smooth enough, but has many other strengths too. I have seen many “reviews” that consist of menu transition examples only! I don’t buy anything to browse smoothly in menus! With N8 you can actually do something.

IPhone4 have no firewall and is very easy to “take control over” using a laptop and wifi-network. If you bring your IPhone to a meeting anyone can easily remotly record all you say on that meeting, and anyone can easily send sms or email from your IPhone while you pay, and anyone can see all your documents and files on your IPhone4 using free software avalible on Internet and a laptop using the sama wifi-network as you and tour IPone4. IPhone4 is too userfriendly as anyone easily can take total remotly control without you ever notice it.

The many crashes is a real problem, my Galaxy S have never crashed or frozen at all. N8 can not show webpages correctly. DLNA would have been a better, cable free, choice than HDMI. USB on-the-go is pointless because 360×640 makes editing documents or watchibg movies a very unpleasant experience.

It’s such a shame that Nokia insists on keeping Symbian around. This phone is amazing from a hardware standpoint, but the software is just junk. Why would anyone buy this when Meego is just around the corner? Is the N8 on schedule for a Meego upgrade?

No matter what you think of Apple, you cannot deny that they’ve totally revolutionized the smartphone. I’m no Apple fan (I use a Galaxy S), but when they released the iPhone in 2007 it truly was innovative. You cannot compare the phones from 2007 to the iPhone and think they were even in the same league.

The problem with the N8 is that it may do 25% more than iOS or Android, but the latter OSes do what do a lot better. It’s a tradeoff–do you want more functionality or a more user-friendly OS?

The N8′s GPU is pushing 32 million triangles/sec. The iPhone 4 and Galaxy S are pushing 90. The N8 is better than the Nexus One, iPhone 3GS and other previous generation phones.

I agree. I’ve been a USA Nokia user for a long time.The reasons that I’ve never purchased an I phone are (1) I refuse to let a carrier lock me into a 2 year contract and (2) place limitations on my mobile device. Why would I purchase a device that I can’t get full functionallity from or at least the functions that I want the most. However, I received my Nokia N8 and had so many problems that the “Advanced Nokia team couldn’t fix. So I had to sent it back the same day. The kicker is that some but not all of the problems that I experienced are mentioned in the review and I’ve read them in personal reviews as well. I’m now waiting on my replacement Nokia device and if it’s not up to par; I think I’m going to the Samsung Galaxy S. I’ve seen one operate and I was very impressed with the functionality and limitless apps.

After a frustrating experience with Android, which is not really a “smart” or “business” phone at all, I’m going to buy the N8. Even my old N80 had a greater depth of real use than my G1, and after researching some new Android phones, it really doesn’t seem the situation has improved. Like this review, some of the latest reviews have been far more positive than the earlier ones.

Thanks. N8 has made a good job of turning my head. iPhone was really nice, but I didn’t appreciate its sound quality and I also want a radio for my biking trips. N8 seems to be tailor made for me, as it has everything I want and nothing wasted just for vanitys sake, like processing power eating vain resolution, while N8 looks sharp in practise too.

N8′s components cost as much to make as iPhone 4′s, but cost only about 60% of it for consumer. N8 could be faster, but its still pleasurable to use, but it does something, that no other phone can even come near: it finally has a real camera, that challenges even pocket cameras. I actually saw a comparison, which showed N8′s image quality whupped some pocket Canons butt, and what was most surprising, it did so easily even. So having a good, no, a really good camera with you all times, is such a feature for me, that after that comparison, I knew which phone I’m buying next pay day, and this article fortified that decission.

What parallel universe do you come from? In this one, the iPhone 4 has antenna issues, cracking screens (and back), yellowing screens, reverse volume buttons, half assed multi tasking, proximty sensor problems and they I have lost track of whatever crazy algorithm they are using to represent signal strength.

Apple does charge for internet tethering, and they don’t provide an option for WiFi AP. These things suck about apple and it’s blatantly a way for them to charge for it in the future. I agree it’s ‘innovative marketing’.

Is there an alternative? Yeah I like Android a lot, it seams to be a much more useful OS than apple’s.

But I guess the key difference is apple got it right from the start. There’s no bugs, viruses and it’s very user friendly. The only way apple could achieve this is by being a bit closed and preventing time wasters from compromising the device.

Until people start saying to me, wow this phone is incredibly reliable and encompasses new ideas that really make a difference, only then will I part with my hard earned cash.

Attitude? Nothing wrong with a bit of banter! Upsets you? I do apologise, I didn’t realise you were into cottaging. Never mind one day you too will find it’s tough at the top.

It looks like the nokia is more of an iPhail or hand decoration. What people like about the fruit company is the fact they develop a product, make sure it works, then release it.

I’m all for competition and I’m an easy going kind of guy (which is why I liked this review). Shouldn’t manufacturers try and employ some of the aspects of iPhone in their own design? e.g. make sure it works, easy to use, no worries?

That was a great review.
Not sure why so many people these days are so concerned about the UI.
I guess i’m more of a hardware and usefulness guy.
Better camera, connectivity, carrier use options, HDMI out, these are all things i find more important.
Not saying that i think the 5800 UI was ok with me, just saying that sybian3 sounds like it’s good enough mated to awesome capabilities.

We’ll see after the browser update if i get an E7 when it hits the shelf, been using an n900 and i’m not sure i can give that browser up for something worse.

One comment: you don’t need JoikuSpot… You can tether the phone wireless with bluetooth (then depends on your PC on the other side: BT 2.1 would hardly bottleneck a 3G internet connection, BT 3.0 should be perfect for internet connection and for data transfer PC device as well..)

Sure the WLAN hotspot is kind of obsolete and cumbersome compared to BT 3.0 tethering.

Generally an honest review but you missed a few things. The screen is AMOLED, not just OLED. The N8 also has the most powerful GPU of any phone out in the market today and teh GPU actually does most of the heavy grunt work on the N8. Just look at ifixit’s teardown that confirms it has the Broadcom BCM2727 GPU with dedicated 3D Graphics.

I NEVER comment on reviews but i’m almost compelled to express my joy at such an unbiased review!!!! Bravo to the writer of this article!!! Clearly presented both cons and pros of such an awesome device. IMHO to me the N8 is similar to the N900 in that it’s just not for everyone. People tend to forget that Nokia is a different beast altogether from say Apple or Google. Apple engineers and developers have an entire YEAR to work on ONE project and base their stakes on that ONE device so developing a “slicker” UI is more of a priority for them. Google with Android only focuses on HighEnd models. Nokia on the other hand has to cater to EVERY cellphone user on the PLANET, from the users who simply want a phone that can make and receive calls to the users like us who demand that our phone combine our laptops, cameras, and mp3 players into a single unit. If a buyer wants a fully functional smartphone with a plethora of connectivity and multimedia options there’s not a “UI” in the world that can deter them from purchasing the Nokia N8, however if a user wants a smartphone that may not have as many options but is still quite capable all the while being “eye candy” then certainly they will choose the iPhone. And to all the people who are claiming that Nokia is sinking only make themselves seem vapid. Everyone thought the Motorola RZR was the end of Nokia (see how well that panned out), even if Nokia may not be as “strong” in the HIGH-END tier of smart phones currently, i don’t foresee Apple or Android making every day “cheap” phones available to the masses anytime soon. Bloggers *** Nokia Fanboys, Google heads and especially iphans*** need to actively educate themselves before making idiotic comments.
