Nokia N8 gets official: €370 in Q3 2010 [Video]

Nokia have officially announced the N8 smartphone, the handset we saw prematurely reviewed (and somewhat panned) yesterday, and the first from the company to pack a 12-megapixel camera with Xenon flash, HDMI connectivity and Symbian^3 OS.  As we've heard before, there's a 3.5-inch 640 x 360 capacitive touchscreen, GPS and 16GB of built-in storage plus a microSD card slot.Video demos after the cut

As well as being the first to run Symbian^3 – which has an improved menu structure, better multimedia handling including CoverFlow-style album browsing and a "visual task switcher" – the N8 is also the first Nokia device to pack Qt integration.  The chassis is made from a single piece of anodised aluminum, and will be available in silver, orange, blue, yellow and black; it measures 113.5 x 59.12 x 12.9 mm and weighs 135g.

Nokia also preload their Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn navigation app, complete with 70 countries-worth of mapping data, and there's Web TV, Ovi Store and social networking integration (including Twitter and Facebook) right from the homescreen.  The 12MP autofocus camera has Carl Zeiss optics and can record 720p HD video; as for A/V output, thanks to the HDMI port you can hook up an HDTV and enjoy Dolby Digital Plus surround sound from the N8.

Battery life from the non-removeable 1,200mAh pack is rated at up to 12hrs GSM talktime or 390hrs GSM standby; alternatively you can record video for 3hrs 20 minutes, play music for 50hrs, play video for 7hrs (or 6hrs if you're outputting via HDMI) or enjoy up to 3hrs 20 minutes of streaming WebTV.  There's also both an FM radio and FM transmitter.

Connectivity includes five-band WCDMA (850/900/1700/1900/2100) and quadband GSM, along with WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB 2.0 (with USB host support) and a 3.5mm headphone socket.  Nokia say the N8 will arrive sometime in Q3 this year, priced at €370 ($496) before taxes and subsidies.

Symbian^3 in action

Powering the Nokia N8 is Symbian ^3, the latest edition of the world's most used smartphone software, which introduces several major advances, including support for gestures such as multi touch, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. The Nokia N8 also offers multiple, personalizable homescreens which can be loaded with apps and widgets. The new 2D and 3D graphics architecture in the platform takes full advantage of the Nokia N8's hardware acceleration to deliver a faster and more responsive user interface. Symbian^3 also raises the bar in performance by delivering greater memory management allowing more applications to run in parallel for a faster multi-tasking experience.

Getting Qt for Developers

The Nokia N8 is Nokia's first device to be integrated with Qt, a software development environment that simplifies the development and makes it possible to build applications once and deploy across Symbian and other software platforms. Nokia has also made the powerful and simple to use Nokia Qt SDK available, in its initial beta, to enable developers to start realizing the potential of Qt.
