I say they are a waste. I have one of the top-rated pocketable cameras (Canon S90) with a bigger sensor at 10 Megapixels, and f 2.0 lens – even I have “wasted pixels.” 12 Megapixels on a phone in 2010 is still a joke.

Thanks for the reminder, Mahmoud, yes indeed the sensor is superior to most in even compact cameras. By “waste” I meant that a 12 MP image is of little use on-line. For quality prints, one would be likely to use a dedicated camera, I trust.

Actually this phone has a quite bigger sensor rated at 1/1.83″
So those more megapixels aren’t a waste ;)

I agree that taking pictures at such high resolution is a waste. My guess is that a 12 MP camera will have better light sensitivity. so one can use pixel binning at 3 MP for example. Also, if the phone handles well 12 MP, it is an indication that it will be more capable overall than one that cannot…

What’s so lustable about 12 megapixel in a tiny smartphone camera? Haven’t people realized that such a large amount of pixel is a pure waste of storage. Even for normal pocket cameras 6 MP with 1/2.5 sensors are more than enough.
