Mr Elop,

I use Nokia phones for more than ten years and recently I have tinkered with a lumia 800. I Like the WP7 interface very much ( I liked Meego better though).

I am still holding on from buying a windows phone because-

a. There is no skype
b. There is no memory card slot.
c. I Need drag and drop file transfer
d. I absolutely need FM radio.

I don't care how many apps WP7 marketplace has. But I absolutely need all those features I mentioned above. Add them your next phone and my cash is yours for years to come. It's that simple!

You are forgetting the compatibility of linux distributions. Parts would still be exchangeable, except applications would be moveable across multiple distributions and said distributions would be free to the masses.
The other beauty of the open source model is that corporations fund their development so that they can request features from the community. This results in the OS being free to the consumer like Ubuntu and Gnome etc. instead of a licensing fee on every copy. Why do you think MS doesn't aggressively target those pirating their software? It is because they already make so much off of the corporations and PC's bundled with it that they don't need to. Have you ever seen a laptop with an option to buy without paying for it's OS?

I think you are somewhat incorrect on thinking MS drove up prices on computers! If anything MS is responsible for the World-Mass adoption of computers!
They may have broken a few (or more) skulls along the way, but the end result is we don't have 20 - 30 crappy/incomplete OS's competing with each other at unaffordable prices for the Majority!

They made it possible for the commoditization of the modern PC wherein you can easily buy and inter-change your PC parts, as opposed to buying an all-in-one PC, which upon becoming faulty can only go to an authorized repair service at quite high service charges!

It's definitely the salespeople who make it hard for WP7 to take off. Phone carriers make their biggest profits from sales of Android handsets and are able to load the Android phones with their bloatware, therefore the sales staff are trained to push these phones over iPhone and WP7 handsets.

Here in Australia our stores are all Android themed and one store in Melbourne has a whole floor called "Android Land", where phone shoppers can explore and learn all about the Android ecosystem. Now that there are some decent WP7 handsets coming out, I think Microsoft really needs to do three things to get their OS to take off:

1 - Get some handsets out to carriers and stores. Only 1 carrier out of 4 in Australia even sells WP7 devices and they are outdated and you'd be lucky to even find them on display in stores. I think a lot of people would like to by a Nokia N900 but if it takes another 12 months before they even hit our shelves I'm sure we will have lost interest.

2 - Work with carriers to not only sell WP7 devices but to actually push them. Make the devices resonably priced and give carriers incentives in the way of good subsidies to entice them to get their staff to actually push WP7 devices.

3 - Market WP7 so people actually know it exists and know to look for it when they do walk into a phone store. Apart from us tech heads I would bet that half of the population doesn't even know that WP7 exists. People who don't know about something are a lot less likely to purchase it. Where are the TV ads telling us why we should be buying a WP7 device?

And obviously you are making assumptions. My point wasn't about content, it was about the UI as a whole. You might not agree but for a very large portion of smartphone buyers, the ability to customize the UI not just the information feeds is a big part of the appeal. That is one of the biggest con's you hear over and over about WP. Maybe you can move the order of the boxes and change the info they feed, but at the end of the day is still a stack of little boxes. some people like that, and I can very much see how for someone new to smartphones, such an arrangement makes for an easy experience. however the arrangement is also not exactly attractive and that is a valid complaint. you don't have to like it, but don't make assumptions about other's experiences just because you have a different opinion.

Not like that in Canada. They give away xbox's with them. People just aren't interested. I think it probably has to do with the fact that everyone hates Microsoft. They are pretty much solely responsible for stifling innovation for the last fifteen years. They threatened lawsuits to protect from the proliferation of linux distributions and, regardless of the validity, the hardware makers didn't have the money to fight ms in court. They also did this to Corel with wordperfect being snuffed out but Corel bit back and that lawsuit is still going on.

MS has driven up the cost of computers for too long using the licensing model over open source development. I hope they fail miserably so, in the mobile space, this time open source wins.

Not true. Just a difference in how things are computed. Android is better suited to multiple cores but suffers on a single where WP7 will not see as many benefits from quad core as android. This is because, unlike WP7 and IOS, android does not give priority to the UI thread and instead treats it simultaneously with all other threads. The benefit of this is that nothing stops when you interact with the screen, the detractor is that it makes low end hardware stutter since it is trying to do too many things at the same time. With dual and quad core, android can have the UI thread running on its own core so this is negated.

I think anyone who is reading a website like SlashGear is the kind of person who probably knows more than the average salesperson in a mobile phone store. Definitely. I've had the experience of being "too knowledgeable" myself on many occasion. You stand there listening to false information and you're either tempted to let it fly, (poor guy didn't any training) or if they're douches, you just say, "No, you're wrong, the N9/L800/L910 isn't all aluminum, it's all poly-carbonate, which is a plastic."
I think salespeople in the States are the worst - they're so entrenched with Android and iPhone (and also any OEM + WP that ISN'T Nokia), that unless Nokia say, "ok salesteam, here's a much, much bigger commission for you if you sell a Lumia", then they haven't got much chance of changing the mindset of the average American consumer.
Yeah I know lol. I'd happily take the 910 with it's current specs based on how the OS performs compared to Android. There are just a few apps I use I'm not willing to do without, and I'm pretty sure WP7 will get them soon, so I'm waiting to see.

Partially in the sense that you can organize your idons however you want, make and organize folders to your liking and use your choice of background. I didn't mean it in the sense of android in which almost everything is customizable. Yes I kow that the live tiles in windows have some degree of customizing and that their color can be changed, but at the end of the day you still end up with a field of same colored boxes. That's what I find restrictive about the experience (well that and how everything is arranged hierarchically). Don't get me wrong, I think WP is a great OS for a first time smartphone user or for grand parents, but then again so is IOS.

I think he has a good point. I had known about WP7 for quite some time before the launch and had already chosen the phone I wanted. The last step for me was going to the store and getting a little hands-on to seal the deal. I had 3 sales reps (from 3 different stores) tell me to check out the Android phones instead (?!). One told me that the Windows OS is no good because its buggy, the other two were just astounded that I was interested in a WP7. I knew way more about the specs of those phones (and a good count of Android phones) than the sales rep. There are a lot of people who I think would like Nokia WP7 phones and other WP7 phones, but kind of go to the store without much knowledge and get carted around by these reps who may have ulterior motives.

Salesmen are probably a big part of the adoption factor, but i think consumer interest is a bigger part - and one that is desperately lacking when it comes to Windows Phone 7.

I get it that the software is good and unique, but personally I prefer a fully custom experience (Android) or even a partially custom experience (IOS) to little boxes.

I think Windows Phone is a great platform, but a big reason I haven't left Android for it yet is the lack of some primetime apps. I use Skype alot to talk to my sister and neice in Germany, and despite the fact that Microsoft now owns Skype, there is no app for WP7. There are also other examples of this, hopefully this will change in the near future. I have an upgrade in Feb, but I'm saving it for the summer when will be quad-core, and what I'm most hoping for, improvements in battery life as promised by Samsung and many manufacturers. So pretty much, I'm hoping WP7 gives me enuff to make the leap by then, or else it's Galaxy SIII.
