After the MS-Nokia announcement it seems very clear that "American investors" that weren't happy with Nokia's current strategy sent Elop over to Nokia to essentially sell them to Microsoft without all the red tape. This could potentially kill Nokia in the long run, but we will see. However for MS it may be the biggest move of Ballmer's career--the takeover of the largest mobile hardware manufacturer in the world for a few hundred million dollars and no real risk tied up in the investment.

Sad day for Finland! You should never have let a MS exec become the CEO of your great company!

I certainly hope by Nokia does not deeply adopt the Microsoft ecosystem. There an analysis at http://thefeuchts.com/NokiaBlog.aspx that would be a much more sane approach anyway, maybe not the only possiblity, but certainly more sane. The post points out an ecosystem would mean something like OVI maps, mail etc, and all of the server side stuff, integrated with a phone, which integrates with a haptic flexible display "watch" which integrates with a HUD, projector, see through displays, etc. Sounds like Nokia needs Microvision tech :)

From the statement about competing with WP7 I gather that it's unlikely to see it on Nokia's phones, as has been speculated in the past week.

Perhaps Nokia could adopt Android for the low-end devices, and keep MeeGo for the top ;)

I would love to read more on this topic.

"It seems Elop will look to different strategies at the low end of the market, too, where the leaked memo believed to be written by the CEO highlighted the danger of cheap Chinese manufacturing."

Why should the Chinese be limited to "cheap manufacturing" and "low end"? They're perfectly capable of producing high end phones too, and with Android they'll have the very same features as Motorola or Sony handsets.

Apple is relatively safe from this competition because they do *differentiate* their product in an unique way (well, and they manufacture in China, too). I don't know how "sustainable" their differentiation is, but looking at their profits it doesn't seem like they're having problems.
