Actually the Nokia N9 has a great 8Mp camera, great imaging software and a great UI…as per the Slashgear review !

To be fair, the Nokias with Zeiss lenses had great optical resolution. And were “faster”, useful in indoor photography. And that is a very important factor in any photography. The other factors being sensor used and processing software. And UI. You have to get all of them right. Perhaps Nokia’s competitors have improved their game in this department too, but Zeiss mobile lenses did turn in great performance.
Today’s cutting edge sensors are back-side illuminated CMOS sensors, not CCDs. And does help!!

Zeiss has a top notch quality reputation in many field in industry and has for a long time.

Unfortunately it does look like they may be selling there name on this one. If the price is too low, they will probably re-brand someone else’s production and reap the profit of name recognition. To bad.

the US government has been around since 1776, and it gets more dysfunctional every day ;)

seniority gets you ahead in the pecking order, but it says zero about quality.

i know optics nerds, and i asked. the answer they gave me is thus: carl zeiss is a good brand for scientific lenses, $20k movie lenses, etc. but there is no way this sort of lens would be glued onto a $200 cellphone. at the level smartphones operate on, lens quality doesn’t matter, as long as it’s past a certain level. the lumia 900′s white balance problems? nothing to do with the lens. from what i hear, it’s more the qualcomm chipset and immature software/OS.

Since they’ve been around since 1846, I’m less inclined to compare them to Beats Audio who has been around for whopping 6 years.

Now about the original question. How does it help? No idea. I’m not a camera nerd unfortunately. I do know people spend thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars on lenses for other areas involving optics so I’m less inclined to believe they are all the same.

Hopefully somebody will stumble across this page and be able to explain why it does or doesn’t matter.

i’ve yet to hear anyone properly explain how this “carl zeiss” lens is different from other smartphone lenses. i’d not even heard of carl zeiss before all the “news articles” about nokia phones. it seems to me that the CCD/imaging sensor is the real factor that determines performance, ya? a bad lens can drag it down, as can bad software (i heard the lumia 900 had some white balance issues?). this is just a lens like any other lens, and this carl zeiss stuff is like dre beats — a marketing ploy. nokia should spend less breath on carl zeiss and more on that 41mp camera they have kicking around in europe.
