Nokia acquires technology from imaging specialist Scalado

Nokia may be downsizing right now, but today the company is buying technology that it feels will help make the best cameras in smartphones going forward. Nokia will acquire developers, intellectual property, and technologies from digital imaging company Scalado. The deal is expected to go through during the third quarter of this year, although the terms of the sale weren't disclosed.

Other than that, the press release doesn't go into too much detail. Nokia notes that the Lund location will become "a key site" for imaging technology in addition to two Finnish locales, Espoo and Tampere. Jo Harlow, executive vice president for Smart Device at Nokia, says: "This transaction would enable us to combine our leadership in camera devices with their expertise in imaging."

The first thought for the acquisition goes to including PureView technology in future Windows Phones, something that Nokia has alluded to in the past. The company has been on the hunt for digital imaging specialists via job listings, and this move will surely bring on board the type of talent they're looking for to help advance smartphone cameras. Will that be enough to save the failing company? Only time will tell.
