No Xbox 360 HD-DVD for Asia

Bad news for any gamers in Asia looking forward to Microsoft’s cheap (by comparison) HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, you might be in for a disappointment. According to Digitimes, Microsoft Taiwan has no plans to launch the long-awaited peripheral in Asia in the immediate future, or quite possibly at all, saying that the area has too small an HD-DVD user base to justify releasing the drive at this time.

Digitimes also reports that Microsoft hasn’t yet chosen a side in the high-definition DVD wars, stating that neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray has managed to take a significant lead over the other as of now. While this statement doesn’t seem like much at first glance, it indicates that perhaps Microsoft might release a Blu-ray drive in the future should the discs become an industry standard. In any event, Microsoft’s refusal to release an Asian HD-DVD drive means that interested users will need to import one from a country that has the drive,. Hopefully, should HD-DVD’s popularity increase overseas, these users won’t be left in the cold. For now, though, get your import orders ready.
