Nissan to recall nearly a million cars over hood latch issue

A hood latch issue has resulted in a 930,000 vehicle recall for auto maker Nissan, which announced plans to recall and repair the affected vehicles on Friday. This recall covers vehicles located around the globe, and marks Nissan's third recall attempt to fix its hood latch woes. The issue affects some Nissan Altima sedans spanning the 2013 to 2015 model years.

The issue revolves around the cars' second hood latch and, in this case, a rust coating said to have been applied incorrectly. That improper coating could cause the secondary hood latch to bind and stay unlatched despite the hood being closed, possibly allowing the hood to fly up when the car is being driven.

Of the 930,000 or so vehicles being recalled, 846,000 of them are located in the United States, while 24,895 are located in Canada and 58,644 are being recalled elsewhere around the globe. Fortunately, there haven't been any crashes or injuries from this issue, according to a Nissan spokesperson.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received complaints from Altima owners who have had their hoods open when they shouldn't. As with other recalls, Nissan's dealers will repair the issue, in this case replacing the hood latch. The repairs are expected to start in February.
