First of all, I can assure you that the X in Xbox does not stand for X-ray. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion on any product name, but Nintendo could have done a lot better than Wii. It sounds too much like a bodily function or euphemism, and rather childish as well. They need to ditch the cutesy kid-friendly names. Can you seriously say Wii U Miiverse with a straight face?

xbox is a silly name, the only name that is a good name in my book is playstation. The X stands for... Xray. The wii is a silly name too. Names don't mean jack. I can't think of a good name for most items these days, maybe samsung galaxy is a pretty cool name. Ieverything certainly is not a good name either. I understand being weary of what nintendo is going to offer especially if the wii was not the system you wanted nintendo to create. That is a valid feeling. To think that this is going to be more of the same is to ignore everything that is different about this system compared to the wii.

These are very fair criticisms. Even as a big Nintendo fan, I agree with you that online was lacking with the wii (though Virtual console is a great online service that no other system will ever match due to most virtual console games are licensed by Nintendo). I also think that people may not try the whole fit/sports thing again. I love the fit personally, and I am still amazed at its accuracy. I think Nintendo needs to do better marketing what they offer.

I figured it was Don Reisinger before I got to the end of the article. Say what? He is impressed by systems that don't exist yet (xbox 70000000 and PS4) but Wii U is meh to him. All well, I am sure there are certain companies that he prefers, I just hope they don't influence his articles by lining his pockets.

I don't think keeping interest is Nintendo's biggest problem at the moment. They have some huge game franchises that I think people would buy consistently. I still have a place in my heart for the Nintendo games of yesteryear; Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, etc. If Nintendo's next console was an exact clone of the Xbox 360 or PS3, I'd be a buyer simply for the line up of games that it would certainly continue to have. It looks like the Wii U is going to follow in the steps of the original Wii: a Frankenstein of gimmicks rolled into an under-powered console. Tablets have just now become popular, so what's the logical thing for Nintendo to do? Make the Wii controller a tablet with buttons. I think the cutesy names like Wii also start to turn off audiences over the age of 10 or so. Give me a console with the power and performance of the Xbox and PlayStation, a normal controller with physical buttons and joy sticks, and new installments of the classics that we all love, with modern graphics and stories, and I'd be a Nintendo fan again. But with lousy graphics, a motion control + touch screen controller, and a name that I can hardly say with a straight face, are what make me uninterested. It's like Nintendo is marketing exclusively to children these days, but that's a bad plan for them, since their fan base from their heydays in the 90s are adults now.

don't get me wrong, i like nintendo and actually i enjoyed the wii the first 2 years or so it was out. But this comment section reeks of nintendo bias.

1) graphics might not matter entirely but presentation definitely can enhance (or can work against) the game. Graphics can definitely factor into a game's presentation, though not every game utilizes high end graphics to do so. But for the games that do (skyrim for example in it's immersive and expansive world), the wii ports looked extremely poor in comparison and really gave the wii a very unappealing perception. So yeah graphics do have some impact, but it depends on the game and how they are going about the presentation. And the wii u graphics don't need to blow us away, they just need to able to handle cross platform titles without the need of the develop to create a far inferior product.

2) the wii may have sold a lot hardware wise, but honestly most of the sales was either do to 1) hype surrounding the new motion controls when the wii was introduced, 2) a pretty strong amount of quality games in the first two years at launch, especially super smash brothers which i think caused a lot of "hardcore" gamers (i hate people who refer to themselves as that) to get the console prior to stashing it in their closet, and 3) wii sports/ wii fit. 1) and 3) i don't think will be replicated, which means that nintendo is going to need to be able to deliver on some of the areas that it, frankly, failed on last gen (a convenient and more streamlined online service (nothing wrong with imitating xbox live to an extent), graphics that at least are competitive enough to not look totally outdated, focus on receiving as many cross platform games as possible to keep their library competitive, reducing shovelware on the console, etc)

This article strikes me as ridiculous.

1) The wii had a
pretty impressive exclusive library from first and third parties. I
didnt see the ps3 or 360 with monster hunter, last story, muramasa,
shiren 3 ( the kinds of games I play)

2) The fact that the ps4
or 720 might be more powerful spec wise...........doesnt matter at all
in terms of system sales. Not even remotely. Nor does it impact the
quality of the game library

"oday’s gamer expects to not
only have high-quality graphics and a deep library of titles, but also a
host of entertainment options, robust online gaming, and a nice
selection of digitally delivered legacy games. We’re more sophisticated
now. And Microsoft, which was really the first company to acknowledge
that, is successful today because of it."

For real? Arent
people calling microsoft a joke for abandoning gaming for entertainment?
Microsoft's 360 was 4th overall this gen worldwide......I wouldnt call
that getting it.

"From Nintendo’s spotty relationships with third-party publishers"

The relationships they have are better than people think.

I didnt see 6 exclusives for ps3 or 360 launch, yet the wii u is getting that........

My issue with this article is it's written by someone who is convinced Nintendo has learned nothing. The implication is that the Wii U will fail because it will be handled exactly as the Wii was and will have all the failings of the Wii. You seem to have simply written off the company. I would not consider this a thoughtful analysis.

Wow. Where to start with this article? "The company wants us to believe that the old days are still here"? One of the biggest things they're working on is their online service. They have said that social networking within their games is one of their priorities. They are the first ones to majorly push digital game downloads of current games on the console. I'd say they're doing a good job trying to adapt to the times.

"Nintendo's spotty relationships with third-party publishers"? They have gone out of their way this time to learn from their past mistakes and really try to reach out to 3rd party devs. The evidence is how many quality 3rd party games are set to be released at launch.

"The threat of Xbox 720 and Playstation 4"? They haven't even been officially announced yet. By the time they finally come out, the Wii U will already have a solid base. We also have to remember that the "amazing specs" that they will have are even more speculation than the rumors of how crappy the Wii U's specs are, which no one really even knows. Sony is hurting badly financially, so how can they even afford to create an amazing machine without charging more than people will be willing to pay? We're not living in a 2006 economy, anymore.

All I can say is that when we bought the Kinect for our 360, we sold our Wii. We were recently given a Wii again, and we're constantly playing it, while the 360 never gets touched. Long live the Wii U.

Whenever I see Nintendo at Slashgear, I see the stupid Don Reisinger name.

"Although I’m not so sure I’ll enjoy it over a long period and I still believe that the Wii U is coming out too soon and with lesser components than it should" Great, go cry in a corner.

" Microsoft, which was really the first company to acknowledge that, is successful today because of it." Every gaming company is going in losses. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Get your facts clear.

" The company wants us to believe that the old days are still here. They’re not. And that kind of mentality will kill the Wii U." Wii U is a whole new concept to redefine gaming. So what if they're trying to make us believe that old days are still here. The old days were still better.

" I was bored within a couple of months." THAT IS WHY NINTENDO CAME UP EARLIER WITH THE Wii U, to get a headstart from other consoles.

Like that Samsung Galaxy S3 was a fail too, cause it was released before the iPhone. A few more months would gave made it more powerful right? Rubbish.

Don Reisinger, you're a horrible writer. I can go against each and every article you've written, and prove you wrong. If you hate Nintendo, great, that's your opinion, but please stop writing crappy articles.

Slashgear CHUCK HIM OUT!

The graphics of PS3 and Xbox360 are good, but definitely have not reach the plateau. Remember when the PS3 and Xbox360 released and both promised to using HD graphics? But most games run at sub-HD for the sake of FPS? Most games are running at 720, so a jump to 1080 is a pretty big leap for next gen, if they can that is. Gaming are not what it used to be, like I have said before, mobile gaming made a big different.

That's what they always say, until the actual next gen's arrivals. However, this next gen is different. Gaming has became more mobile, as in cellphones/tablets double as a gaming devices. The strategy must be different. Nintendo can't rely on Mario and co. forever. What the author stated above is true for my case too. I used to play with the Wii when it first came out and now, I don't remember the last time I turn the power on.

I liked nintendo, but i am so exausted to think we have to wait forever for nex gen consoles, when ps4 xbox720 come out
–Hurry the hell up, damn

People will never be satisfied. The next gen race is never ending and Nintendo realizes that. I think too many are expecting them to change their approach to gaming and their business model in order to "step it up" in this boring next gen race. Really the only thing they have to do, is keep innovating and putting out the great games they have always put out. Make the familiar better and "new" and watch as the competition follows in their footsteps a year later. The Wii U is a perfect example of what Nintendo does best and I doubt they will ever change that.

If you ask me, PS360 graphics are perfectly fine. I don't think graphics can continue in leaps and bounds as it has. I think it's reached a plateau, unless you want to pay a premium for it. I just wish the Wii U could have been released a while ago, but I don't think it should have a problem of being underpowered as much as the Wii did. Nintendo games are awesome. Add HD and there's nothing else I can ask for. Just my two cents.

i don't think the wii u is a winner, but that's ok. nintendo has a long track history of aggressively pushing the line. most of the time they succeed, but there's the occasional virtual boy. people mocked the wii's name until it launched and sold hard for years. if the wii u doesn't work, i have faith they will figure out why, and come back with something killer next cycle.
