Nintendo mobile games denied: Nikkei mix-up

Yesterday a rather quick-spreading report of Nintendo very possibly moving to mobile devices like the iPhone and Android smartphones of all sorts was initiated by Japan's Nikkei and perpetuated by the masses. Today Nintendo has provided a statement that suggests Nikkei's report was based on bits and pieces strung together to create a news strand that, in the end, simply isn't truthful.

In a statement shared with Engadget, Nintendo lets it be known that they're not going to be making Nintendo software available anywhere other than on their own home-grown hardware. This is how it's been for generations, and this is how it's got to be through the future as well. This addresses the "minigame" or "mini-demo" suggestion directly.

"Nikkei's article contains information previously stated by Mr Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo's willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products.

However during such past announcements Mr Iwata has also stated that Nintendo's intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer minigames on smartphone devices." – Nintendo

Meanwhile Nintendo's financial Q3 results are set to appear this week as well. They'll quite likely be spilling the beans on some less-than-fantastic news for Wii U sales, but we're expecting some manner of good news on their future expansion. Letting it be known that they understand where they are – and are willing to explore non-traditional avenues – means there's hope for Nintendo games on devices other than the Wii and their own handhelds – but we'd still need to see a rather large change of heart from the crew.

Have a peek at recent Nintendo news below to walk up on today's release, and stay tuned for the results later this week. Jimmy Fallon spoke up about how well the company is doing last night, suggesting that "the company was actually doing pretty well, but they hit a banana peel and lost all their coins."
