They are taking the third option and are continuing with the 3DS. As this past year has proven, the market is still there (it never really left) for handheld gaming systems. There are people that actually want to play substantial games that buy them as well as parents that buy a 3DS for their children (do you think a parent would buy something like a smartphone or tablet for their kid?). Despite the smartphone propaganda against Nintendo, the 3DS is doing better at this point in its life then the DS was.

Saying gamers are going for smartphones is like saying gamers were going for cellphones during the time of the GBA because cellphones came with games like Snake. No one buys a phone for Snake -- or for Angry Birds.

People buy smartphones because they're like swiss army knives -- they have about everything. But they don't do most of those things as well as dedicated devices do (has a camera, but higher-end cameras outperform it -- has games, but not on the level of the 3DS or PSV -- is like a TV with cable, but without the ability to input other devices or without the screen size -- is like a computer but without the memory or functionality, etc.). With $1 to free games on the apps stores, impulse buys and downloads will happen en masse, but it doesn't mean that people lick their chops at the opportunity to play games on their phones. Most people download a game, are amused with their friends for a couple of hours to a week, and then never play it again. Perhaps people should look into the retention rate of people who download these games.

The DS had a slow start and increased sales in subsequent years. The same with the Wii. The 3DS is actually starting off better than the DS did and with more games on the way and more functionality, the sales will continue to go upward.

Last I heard my GX1 still performs better than my phone.

No, a single smartphone can't do all those things. The whole point of buying a smartphone is having to compromise carrying stuff with convenience. BUT... a very big BUT... a smartphone CANNOT replace dedicated devices. Even the iPod is a better mp3 player than any phone. DSLR and compact cameras are better than smartphones. And last but not the lease, dedicated GAMING devices are BETTER than smartphones.

True, I sometimes get tired of carrying all 3 of my devices (phone, camera, 3DS) all the time. But never, ever would I replace the other 2 with just a phone. You just can't get some kinds of images on a smartphone. Just because you used instagram doesn't make it good. You also can't get the gaming experience you get on a dedicated device.

You wouldn't understand it if you're not a gamer.

getting used to it is not the point, the point is that 3D is the main feature of the 3DS and I don't watch movies in 3D I won't play games in 3D I won't buy a 3D tv or a 3D phone. I will not use 3D, I'm not going to buy a device and then simply turn off the key feature, that would be like buying a new Blu-ray player and never using it to play movies. In addition to that I'm never going to buy another portable gaming console unless it's also a phone. I will not carry around a dozen different devices to do all the things that a single smartphone can do (camera, game console, mp3 player, movie player, GPS) the whole point of buying a smartphone is to not have to carry around a dozen gadgets.

"I won't buy a 3DS because of the 3D part"

Thats just silly. One have you used it for an extended period of time? I.E several days? You get used to it.
But more importantly you can turn it off!

Mobile phones and tablets aren't going to replace dedicated gaming devices for the same reason they aren't going to replace televisions and cameras. While phones and tablets can perform the same basic functions as those devices they don't do them nearly as well. Likewise these app store games are fine if you have a few minutes to kill but quickly become repetitive and boring. Could better games be developed for mobile devices? Sure, but there are major obstacles that must be overcome. In addition to controller issues, there are also storage issues and price issues. How much time and development is a company really going to be willing to put into a game that sells for $10 or less?

I can actually see Mario Kart working really well on smartphones.

Nintendo's at a crossroad right now. They need to decide whether they want to sell games on iOS and Android. I suspect they'll make a killing if they do. Their catalog is huge, and they arguably have more Grade A games than any other publisher.

I have a DSi XL that I hardly ever use anymore, I won't buy a 3DS because of the 3D part. I love Mario Kart it's one of my favorite games, and Zelda (Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass), and of course Pokemon; but I'm tired of having to haul around another device.
I'm sorry, but if Nintendo didn't meet their sales projections for 3DS systems in it's launch year, it's not going to sell 18 million systems (5 million more than launch year) in the second year now that nobody is excited about the system at all. That's very, very unrealistic. If the Wii-U really does cost $100 more than a Wii at launch, it is going to be a tough sell, particularly as normal people (ie non-Nintendo fanatics) are not going to be excited about it - there's no particular draw for non-Nintendo fans as their was with the Wii at first.

I'm sorry, but Nintendo really screwed the pooch on their current gen systems (3DS and Wii-U, the latter of which will launch this Fall).

First Sony and now Nintendo. Lets wait for all the fanbois to come out of the woodwork screaming that smart-phones and tablets pose no danger to dedicated gaming systems; that companies like Nintendo would be fools to release their titles in those platforms; and that anyone saying otherwise has no idea what they are talking about.

While they argue nonsense, the CASUAL game buying public is voting with their wallets and on the flexible platforms they actually carry.

Companies like Nintendo, Sony and others would be wise to to spend their R&D on tablets using popular operating systems, but with high end hardware and and their own modifications so as to make them full featured tablets, dedicated to gaming. Todays dedicated mobile gaming devices might be superior to tablets and phones, but the bulk of the game buying public is saying that they don't mind and prefer the flexibility and lower app prices of those devices, versus the lock-in and high prices of dedicated gaming devices. Evolve or die gaming companies.
