Is there an official definition for "video game console"? My "IRL" definition would delineate the difference between a Wii (console), and a portable gaming system (DS). The DS is not a console, in my book, because it's primary purpose does not have it attached to an external display.

Anyways, regardless of the semantics, I don't find this surprising. Walk into any Target or Walmart, and you'll see a lot of low income families hording Wii's and DS's in it's 5th year of production. Beats paying 300 for an XBOX 360 or PS3.

They need to come up with more poignant metrics for gaming in general. Units sold is irrelevant. I'm sure Nintendo, Sony, and MS would much rather have 100,000 units sold with an average playtime of 8 hours a day on each one, then 1,000,000 units sold with an average playtime of 1hr a week on each one (*Wii cough cough*). Especially since most consoles are subsidized in it's first couple years of production.

Or maybe total titles sold on a platform, since the bulk of the money for everyone comes from licensing, royalties, and direct sales from games, not the consoles themselves.

Just saying, total numbers of consoles sold is always used as some benchmark for actual popularity, when we all know it was Grandpoppy picking up a Wii in the middle of a floor stack at the local Walmart.
