I'm not. My comparison is between the 5d and the Nikon. The fact that both of you guys are talking crap about a camera not even available yet is beyond me at this point. I am doing a shoot in about three months and the DP of it will have the d800 to shoot. I base my opinion on the fact that Nikon has come up tremendously short every single time. My 1080p from my 5d is uncompressed as I edit it on my avid.

As for the epic scarlet and the c300, I look forward to shooting on those camera for bigger projects but know that for the indie filmmaker it isn't a real option.

if you are so impressed by your sub $5000 5d, 7d, t2i camers to shoot videos with, why do you need to get the EOS300 or a Red Scarlet later on?

besides, why are you even trying to compare the D800 to $16,000 dedicated cinema cameras? doing so only elevates the D800's video capabilities.

pretty much everybody who wants high quality video without compression artifacts. you can pick your codec and bitrate like prores which gives you higher dynamic range and latitude for editing. add that new features for audio monitoring and control, and the D800 is a videographer's dream camera at just 3K. Compare that to the super expensive RED/canon/sony equivalents and you see why this will be a hit among the indie film makers. With the vidoe market still surging, nikon will easily give the 5D a run for its money in the low price full frame HDSRL segment. Up until now canon pretty much had the market to itself since nothing else was full frame with video on par with it. Things have turned around. Seeing how amazon sold out in less than 24hrs on all D800 variants, they have a hit on their hands.

as far as the high end goes, I think canon will flop for sony/panasonic are much larger video companies and heavyweights which have been in the high budget film industry for ages and will easily outclass the new players. RED is more nible and will be sort of the apple equivalent pushing 4K before anybody. the reality is that canon is outclassed and outgunned against the video giants and lacks the agility of RED. Sony is already rumored to have a C300 killer in the wings with 4K video and all the bells and whistles.

Regardless, that's not the crowd the 5D or D800 are after which is indie and ammateur film folks without a truck of equipment and a production crew.

Who care about 1080 out? It all has to do with the final image going into my editing bay and what it looks like coming out. Nikon has missed the mark repeatedly with filmmakers looking for a sub 5000 dollar digital camera to shoot with. I will say that as much work I have shot on my 5d, 7d and t2i, I still prefer Nikkor lenses to Canon's. Overall, it will take more than 1080 uncompressed to a monitor for me to even take a look at a Nikon, especially when I get to shoot in 2 months with the new EOS300 cinema from Canon and hopefully a Red Scarlet at the end of the year.

Who cares about what it looks like on a monitor. He's stating the fact that the video on a Canon 5d is better than what is on the new Nikon. I can say that after several hundred shorts, features, commercials and music videos I have shot on my 5d with Nikor lenses, it will take a friggin miracle from Nikon for me to go to the 800.

The video on this site is a poor example to use for comparison as it is heavily compressed to make it easily watchable on the internet. We'll have to wait for through reviews comparing the uncompressed video from both.

remember you're watching a video that's been uploaded to a website, which probably degrades the quality a little so it's watchable through internet connection. don't hate just because you own a canon. also, nikon offers uncompressed HDMI and audio outputs. even the 1Dx doesn't have those.
