Make the 6th gear more usable while still providing good fuel economy. IIRC, the new EPA tests at higher speeds so having a 7th gear allows for a “super overdrive” gear that can be used to get better results which allows them to publish higher MPG on the highway. That alone is good for overall fuel economy as well as being a nice “look at this” thing to show to prospective customers.
