Elop’s target was to bring WP mainly in countries, where N9 did not been released,
because he wanted only WP to succeed and N9 would stole their market shares.

Developing countries market, where internet data rates are expensive, are not keen on the Zune dependant WP7 phones. If they want a ‘gated’ phone, iphone is far more popular & established.
Nokia Symbian users are not keen to jump on an OS that has no usb mass storage, SD card and bluetooth(before Lumia 900)

Oh, how sweet could Maemo/MeeGo/Meltemi have been had Elop not sold Nokia to Microsoft. At least they are not going to let it die completely, and maybe we’ll get another epic handset like the N9 every year.

Not marketing the N9 in all big markets is just another bizarre decision by the Nokia management. The only logical explanation is that it is a part of the deal with MS, i.e. no money from MS unless the N9 is kept of the big markets.

I’m not convinced by the apps argument. What really gives customers the confidence to “invest” in a product is the OEM commitment to the system, in terms of future products which will allow their media/apps to be purchased in the knowledge that it’s not money down the drain.
Witness the almost instant demise of Symbian following the announcement by Nokia that it was being hived off.
This news that Meego may have a future should help the cause by attracting both app developers and customers too.
I also agree with the view that Nokia need a fall back position against further problems with the sale of Windows phones.
A senior/board appointment from one of the major Linux corporations would not go amiss either !

Yes, but if they sell these in quantity in the developing world, then app developers will come to them. And it’s an open platform that has been in development for longer than WP7, it’s not entirely lacking.

I think it is already known as Meltemi.. The official naming hasn’t come out, maybe that is why it is still being referred to as MeeGo.

I’m surprised by this, yet not so much. Meego, which once was Plan A, gave way to Windows Phone Plan B. So far, Plan B seems to be off to a bumpy start, and Meego is being kept alive as a possible Plan C.

Nokia has a shorter time frame than MS in this partnership. MS can afford to keep plugging WP for as long as it takes. Nokia has a huge infrastructure, and in order to feed that baby they have to build phones that people will buy. They cannot risk becoming irrelevant in the smartphone market.

I wonder at what point this will officially be named “Meltemi”. On that day, past hopes of MeeGo being a full-fledged smartphone competitor will officially be dead. That said, I think it’s a brilliant idea to scale this OS down to the low-end market, it will provide a lot of desirable elements at a low cost while keeping Nokia as the leader in those markets.

I think that MeeGo Harmattan is amazing and if Nokia will use MeeGo as Meltemi on devices with N9′s hardware, Nokia can replace the good old Symbian and S40.

I’ve been using the N9 for 2 months (coming off of Android) and this phone can do anything. Levels of frustration (including related to upgrades) are way down since the switch, and I couldn’t give a rat’s a$$ about a gazillion useless fart apps, I have everything that I need – in-system integration w/ FB, Twitter, my Google accounts, Skype, Picasa, Dropbox… The battery holds to almost 2 full days, and the thing has a real multitasking.

So yeah, I do think this OS should be pushed further – in fact, Nokia’s mistake was that the phone was not launched in bigger markets. That would have given them a great flagship device to build the ecosystem around. But … oh well..

The linked to article damages its credibility a bit, though, by saying MeeGo can run Android apps. A remarkably persistent meme when the level that the N9 can run Android apps is the same level that the N900 could: in a YouTube video hawking Alien Dalvik to OEMs.

I suspect this is just a continuation of the Meltemi plans, and that there are now devices being targetted which can run it. Suspect that although the SoC may be the same things like multitouch capacitive screens may be lost. It’s also interesting to speculate how much overlap there is between Harmattan and Meltemi, given so many of the folks working on MeeGo at Nokia have been laid off.

Apps are what sell smartphones these days, introducing more and more OSs is counterproductive to that end because developers aren’t going to be building apps for that many different platforms, it’s hard enough getting them to build for WP7 and don’t even think about RIM, if you just want a phone you can check your email on you can do that with a premium internet phone no need to go all the way to a smartphone. It would be better for Nokia to stick with WP7 at least that platform is starting to pick up and there will be a decent demand for apps
