It is impolite to answer a question with a question (or two).

Wi-Fi would be the wireless standard used to transmit the signal, but it has no bearing on how the two parties will identify each other on the web. Currently, this works in FaceTime by using the phone number as ID. So what if the recipient is not a phone?

This decision is going to hurt apple. First off, if they had included a front facing cam with facetime, they would of seriously eclipsed apple, facetime, and even video calling to the next level of popularity. Second, it would encourage or even want people to get an apple product to communicate thru facetime. This wa a terrible business decision.

That would probably be the big question to be asked about implementing something like FaceTime on the iPod Touch. There’s ways they could do it, of course — provide a number for your FaceTime account, that they create specifically for iPod Touch owners. Or, as you pointed out, folks could just use a different system altogether, as long as the camera is there to use at all.

Pity, nobody knows. With the open nature of FaceTime, it should have been possible to implement PC-to-FaceTime calls, provided that there was a way to initiate the connection…

How exactly would FaceTime calls reach a device without a phone number?
