The new iPads set the factory default to”winter mode” (when they were manufactured by hardworking Chinese kids’ tiny hands). It is designed to warm your hands when using it during cold winter months… If you switch it to the summer mode, it will gently blow cool air at you… :-)

Yeah, definitely don’t plan on using it in the sun in the summer, I live in Texas lol if I sit outside too long I burn lol

But yeah, played about 30 minutes of infinity blade II and noticed the normal warmth I would expect from a graphically intense game. My guess is that people are expecting these things to not be like computers and get hot. The heat I experience is NOWHERE near what I get on my laptop, as my laptop gets unbearingly hot after 30-45 minutes of simple web browsing, let alone gameplay. My guess is the combination of streaming over lte using an app requiring the gpu is the culprit here. I love how some people are saying the new battery is the culprit, but if that were the case, the entire damn thing would be hot, not just the corner where the battery isn’t even located.

But yeah I guess we’ll find out once someone does a scientific test, not a “I played XXX while outside and it got hot” test lol

Here’s what irritates me about articles like this one: 1) The story is based on anecdotal evidence, 2) No specifics are mentioned, 3) The author uses relative terms like, “toasty”, “warmer”, “warm” – take some measurements!

Have you tried playing 1080p video or one of those new “retina display friendly” games? If you’ve not noticed any heat, then it’s probably safe to say that it’s more to do with the cellular/LTE chipsets than the GPU.

We won’t know for sure till someone (like Anandtech) does a definitive test or Apple release a statement.

I don’t think it’s that big of an issue. Increased temperatures shouldn’t be a problem as long as it doesn’t get uncomfortable for the user or has the potential to damage internals. Performance during summer or in humid tropical climates have to be taken into account as well, obviously.

Same here when I was playing with a display unit. Wasn’t uncomfortably hot, but definitely warm enough to make you wonder if extended use would damage components inside.

Then again, I haven’t really “tested” that many slates, so I’m not really sure if this level of heat is a normal occurrence or not.

Well, I played with one in best buy the other day, and the tablet was warm. While the iPad 2 was nice and cool, this was completely warm. Warm where it made you start questioning “should it even be that warm?”

Either a defect, or so much “power” that it heats up quite quickly.
