It is a lot easier to put security stickers with serial numbers tied directly to the phone so any unauthorized openings will be obvious allowing for an easy voiding of the warranty. Sure, it won't catch all but it will cover a LOT of ground.

Making changes to the device that customers paid for and wholly own difficult to manipulate just looks like plain arrogance to me. It's probably also intended to keep the revenue stream for batteries and memory upgrades flowing to Apple exclusively (as much as possible).

It their product, they can do as they wish and the massive lemming community will not likely even notice or care - they just want to show the world they've got an Apple device. What worries me is that Apple continues to get away with actions that if performed by any other large company like Microsoft, Sony, RIM, Nokia, etc... there'd be enough flamethrowers to BBQ a dozen Brontosauruses. What next?

Give me five minutes with a dremel and I can probably make that tool out of a phillips screwdriver! What a waste of time for apple. As this article mentions, there is already a company selling the driver needed to remove the screws. Way to go Apple! You have created a problem for people that was solved more quickly than it took you to create it!

What you say, JD, may be valid for iPhones, but that does not excuse the use of pentalobe screws on notebooks, especially on Mac book pros which have always been subject to user addition of Ram and hard drives.

This is one more example of the Great White Father grabbing control of OUR equipment. Censorship in the iTunes app store is bad enough, but this naked grab for control of OUR computers is beyond the Pall.

They are smart to do this. People will open their phones, wreck them, and oops... I want a warranty repair. This way its not *that* easy to get into one, but if you have to do it there are ways. Best of both worlds. Don't blame Apple, blame the idiots who cost companies money by going where they don't belong.
