Netflix now available on Virgin Media TiVo set-top boxes in the UK

Back in September, we heard the first rumblings that Virgin Media in the UK would be offering the ability to stream Netflix content to users of its TiVo set-top boxes. The move came as part of an effort by TiVo to help Netflix get on the set-top boxes around the world. TiVo boxes are currently offered by several major cable television companies in the US and the UK.

Virgin Media subscribers in the UK can now get access to their Netflix accounts on their TiVo set-top boxes. Mainstream availability comes after a successful trial offering Netflix to limited number of TiVo set top box users on the Virgin Media network.

Virgin Media says that the Netflix app will roll out over the next several days to TiVo set-top box users. The Netflix app will coexist alongside Virgin's own on-demand content. Virgin Media TiVo set-top box users who haven't tried Netflix yet will be able to get six months of free Netflix service with a caveat.

That caveat is that to get the free six months of service, Virgin Media customers have to be currently subscribing to the Premier or VIP Collection packages. Some believe that by offering the Netflix app on its TiVo set-top boxes, Virgin Media will put pressure on other domestic satellite rivals such as Sky and BT in the UK to do the same. TiVo boxes are currently used in over 1.8 million homes in the UK.
