NEOH headphones promise theater-quality 3D surround sound

Speakers offering 360-degree "3D" sound quality are becoming increasingly common, and so it isn't surprising that a company has decided to bring the tech to headphones. Enter the NEOH, which is bid as the "first smart 3D audio headphones", giving audiophiles and general music lovers alike a spatial sound experience more realistic than what you get with an ordinary pair of headphones, at least according to the maker. It's not surprising, then, that the NEOH is being referred to as a "wearable home theater system".

This 3D effect is created using spatial sound simulation working in conjunction with integrated motion sensors and the NEOH player. Through that, users can watch movies or listen to music with the 3D audio effect in place. The headphones can also be used without the app, but will sound like regular headphones.

As for the headphones, they offer a minimum of 18 hours of playback on a charge, which will let you watch about a dozen or so movies before needing to plug it in. There are 40mm drivers and a 20Hz to 20kHz frequency response, Bluetooth, a standard 3.5mm audio jack, micro USB port, and relatively light weight at 270 grams.

3D Sound Labs, the company behind NEOH, is looking to raise $80,000 USD on Kickstarter, and so far it has raised nearly half of that with almost $33,000 in pledges (27 days remain). The Super Early Bird units are already gone, but those interested in an early bird pair can get the NEOH with a $199 USD pledge. Shipping starts in June.
