Also depends on the hardware and software used to play the files, obviously.

Out a 320kbps track via a DAC converter into a set of set of electrostatic headphones + amp, and you’ll be able to make out a lot of deficiencies. Heck, even some FLAC I’ve listened to on electrostatics (think Stax earspeakers) sound kinda lossy.

On the other hand, most will struggle to hear any difference between 256kbps and lossless FLAC/ALAC if they’re using iPods with the standard white earbuds.

It’s been demonstrated that most people in general cannot distinguish 320kbps from lossless. Further, most audiophiles were willing to admit that 256kbps is good enough for them depending on the encoder.
