National Semiconductor offers new power saving tech for mobile devices

Almost everyone has a mobile phone today and one of the things that consumes the most power inside your mobile phone is the display. Any technology that can reduce the power consumed by the display on our mobile devices translates directly into more run time and longer battery life.

National Semiconductor has announced that it has developed a new white LED driver with dynamic backlight control that claims to be able to reduce power consumption of portable displays by a whopping 55%. The new driver is called the LM3530 and comes in a 12-bump micro SMD package.

The device uses ambient light-sensing algorithms and content-adjustable backlighting to optimize the brightness of the display and save power. The system has been tested in an iPod touch and with the driver and technology onboard; the iPod had a power savings of 55%.
