Seriously? This is their big news? We’ve known about extremophiles here on earth for decades. They’ve been looking for water-based life all this time and never thought that there are other lifeforms that we know of on our own planet that might exist elsewhere?

If this is something new (not related to the aforementioned 2005 microbe that was discovered), then this is pretty awesome stuff. It kind of reminds me of that one line from Jurassic Park that goes something like “nature finds a way.” I mean, even in what we believe to be unliveable poisonous conditions, there exists a way for nature to produce life. Really makes you question what unhabitability really means…

Here’s the link to the 2005! article on NPR about an arsenic eating microbe in the same California lake, it must be something new otherwise this is a 5 year old story.

If it is only a microbe that eats arsenic in that lake this is NOT news!
