I think you misunderstood me. When a phone maker has it's own OS, they control the app store which is where the mass of revenue is generated. ie Google make more money from their app store than HTC or Samsung because it is their OS.

By Nokia choosing to use WP7 as the OS, Microsoft will make money off of all the apps sold for the device. Had Nokia gone with Meego, everyone would have purchased their apps from OVI, and Nokia would have gotten a larger cut than they will get from WP7 based apps, as Microsoft would not have taken any cut from the sale. I am unaware of how the deal stands, but I am sure that Nokia would be lucky to receive any money from apps bought for the WP7 OS. Even if Nokia keep OVI, it is likely that the WP7 user will use the windows app store instead thus Nokia makes nothing from apps.

It can already run Android. The N900 with Maemo runs "NITdroid" (Android 2.3) in "dual boot" and has had Windows/XP and MacOS installed on it. So, expect that somewhere someone already has Android running on the N9.

MeeGo requires more technical skills, because it is so easy to play around with. There is no warning against applications that compete for the same resources - e.g. the sensor. It is so easy just to install a new "Camera" application that makes it impossible to use the old "Camera" and of course also the main video, in particular, the front camera used by Skype. It is all software, coded by mortals capable of misunderstandings.

With Linux, Nokia needs to develop tools that detect conflicting software, and probably remove a lot of features/code to obtain stability needed in a commercial device. It is "open source" unlike Windows and iOS. Maemo is 3 year ahead on this road, so had I been Mr. Elop, I would returned to safe ground, Maemo and tried to merge this with Ubuntu Netbook distribution. That can open for a huge distribution.

Where is this "Huuuuuuge" market - I fail to see it, and I travel a lot!

So far, Nokia N900 is the only phone on the market that runs the Office applications. Microsoft has a strange notion that a mobile phone is a peripheral, like a headset with a mike on the USB port of a PC. My mobile phone is in my pocket, and access 2 IMAP accounts, links to my office LAN as a PC and mounts "shares" - and allows Windows PC link to its shares.

I lack MS Project, but hope to get the Linux "Planner" running.I can make my presentation from my phone, interface my home entertainment center, surf the net, and polish the presentation with last minute updates. I can play around with my spreadsheets, read and edit the contract - and forward this as a securly locked PDF document.

WP is canned now - all future Windows devices will be made by Ericsson, and branded "Nokia".

The UI on the N9 is far from brilliant, but since it is Linux, any artist can make their own "Themes" better than Nokia's. Again, just look at the N900 running Maemo/Hildon and compare what you get today to what was around when the phone was launched.

Just as Symbian was available to everyone (against a tiny fee to its originators such as Psion), Linux is free. There will not be any licensing costs going to Finland or the US should you develop a killer application, and distribute this in millions. The payment for the application will hit your pocket, while Nokia gets the profit from selling another mobile device, and your operator can charge for network usage. This is the mobile "ecosystem" - which does not include, Apple, Google or Microsoft. They are leeches that tries to jump on a wave and will die with it.

The difference between "Harmattan" and "Hildon" - is that both are based on Linux, and the like MacOS, it runs X/Windows that comes in variants based on the richness of functions. MacOS comes with OSX, while Nokia has based theirs on the GNOME, open Linux variant. The MeeGo is based on the Korn Development Environment - KDE where they have made their own variant "Harmattan" probably because the Meamo - "Hildon" does not support multiple touches on the screen - like the "Expand" motion on the iPhone. Had I been Nokia, I would have dropped "Harmattan" and based it all on another open source, "Active Plasma" that some Samsung tablets come with.

To thoseof you that use Windows, this is like different themes - White or Black, but one supports swipes with two fingers, the other just with one. Anyway, Windows users can just swipe with one. Both Hildon and Harmattan runs 32/64 bit and supports the same streaming media as Windows. Both interface easily with Windows. Hilldon is tested, bugs removed and enhanced, and bluntly use less resources. Harmattan supports new gags, contains new bugs but support more functions/swipes/gestures. The N9 can also support other interfaces, such as "Active Plasma". The problem is that white text on a white background is just as difficult to read as black text on a black background. The kernel is well protected from computer viruses, the kernel debugger cannot be accesses and cannot be used to dump your address book in none of them.

Those of you that use MacOS - Meamo compares with MacOS, just that the Window Manager is not OSX, but Hildon. The functionality of Harmattan is not supported by SnowLeopard nor the new Lion. With Linux comes the same virus protection as on MacOS, and the same command-line interface as on the Mac. The Mac use a command language identical to Meamo, KDE is not available on MacOS.

The difference is like Protestants and Catholics, they are both Christians but slighly different.

MeeGo is a variant of Meamo, so the Maemo applications will gradually be ported to the N9.
What may happen is that the two are merged. Very many develop applications on Linux because of the development environment this provides. E.g. Nokia's Qt is coded on Linux running KDE, the same as on MeeGo.
At the universities, they will develop on Linux. E.g. the "biometrical face recognition" has been compiled and runs on N900 - and can be recompiled for the N9. Hacker tools such as WLAN/ WPA code sniffer/ runs here, iPhone emulator ("Macuco"). Nokia does not have to do anything, the N900 will remain as the only "pocket PC and mobile phone" - and drag along the N9 as the variant without the keyboard.
Are you a neurologist, then the University of Copenhagen have developed a EEG aparature that runs on the phone using te USB port. They probably have EKG somewhere - so now you have a device, where you test on a PC, then just install it on a pocket device, in a context where emergency services can get involved automatically. The N9 may be good looking but since it has no "Ecosystem" it can be used to anything. Apple does not have to be involved, Nokia is ignorant, there is no license fees that has to be paid to a foreign company. Just distribute.

Don, the N9 runs MeeGo, a Linux distro. It is has a different "Window Manager" than Maemo that runs on the 770/800 and N900 - so an OS that Nokia knows inside out, and Qt is developed and maintained on KDE, the same as MeeGo. (Maemo does not support this, just Debian Linux, with Hilldon window manager).

Now what can Nokia learn of their N900: This has "Macuco" browser that emulates the iPhone browser (well it also runs Opera and Firefox/Iceweasel), it runs Android through dual boot. So if you really need an Android "app" - start NITroid, Android 4.3. Need to access BBC's newsfeed for iPhone - install Macuco. It is "Winnie the Pooh" of them all - "Yes, I will take both".

The N900 is the only mobile around that is a complete PC. Here you can run OpenOffice, you can play around with your spreadsheets, and any Linux application that runs under a GNOME windows manager (almost everyone) can just be recompiled for ARM copied and re-linked on the mobile. 48GB is enough storage for large applications, so why not get Oracle to make a version available, then SAP will follow to make the packages "mobile". The database systems have utilities to "replicate" as needed. Now beside the money that MS pays Nokia for making a mobile phone that runs WP7, give me one other reason to strike an alliance with MS. Beware, N900 will also run Windows/XP (and MacOS "Snowleopard", no iOS here).

I am editor working for Tietokone Magazine who wrote the article in Finnish you are referring to as your source. Thanks for your credits, but I have to correct your details a little bit. As you wrote, I had two sources, one working for a mobile operator and another one for a distributor company. However, they both said Nokia would have a successor for Nokia N9 (MeeGo device), probably in case their Windows Phone strategy fails. They did not share details on what this assumption is based on. So they did not definitely confirm a successor for Nokia N9.

It would be very stupid not to have a plan B as an alternative to WP. Peoples preferences vary and Nokia should try to cater to everyones taste. The N9 and its UI are brilliant work and is wholly owned by Nokia, i.e. no licensing fee. In addition the sunk cost is large. It would be stupid not to capitalize on it.

A word to Nokia...u have a winner in MeeGo and almost everyone who has seen it on the N9 wants one and would like to see more devices running MeeGo. Yes u have the deal with Microsoft which is cool but don't abandon ur gem..u worked tirelessly to get it to this point. If Apple can put iOS on one device every year and make a HUGE success of it....i should think Nokia should be able to do that with one or two super devices running MeeGo and have at least half the success...just get the devices to the masses on a timely basis.

I said it b4...it is a mistake for Nokia to abandon MeeGo after all the work they put into it only to walk away when it came to fruition. But if they have a change of heart and want to continue it in some form then that will be good news for Nokia and those who love and used to love Nokia. From what i have seen so far on the N9 if Nokia can up the specs and produce a MeeGo device with say a 1.5GHz dual core Ti 4470 OMAP or Snapdragon S3 Krait processor, 1-2GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, micro SD card slot of 32/64GB, 12Mpx cam, a 2Mpx front cam, an 1800-2000mAh battery, 4.3" or 4.5" Amoled curved screen device with gorilla glass it will be a huge winner for Nokia. Forget all the windows talk..such a device will bring back Nokia full force. This coming from someone who used to be an avid Nokia man but moved to Android when Nokia started to falter and taking so long for them to bring an announced product to the market. Still have my N95...that is where it all started but Nokia dropped the ball and gave room to the fruit and the green droid

Come on Slash, talk about the 3500 fixes and updates in the next update and the fact they ARE working on the next update after that. Also, MyNokiaBlog reports there is a contest for people to write how they would improve the N9 OS for the possible win of a N9, something the bashers should look into. I see the N9 as the experiment OS that keeps evolving. Nokia didn't say it was dead, you anti Nokia websites did. Nokia said it was a limited production phone that would appeal mainly to tech heads and developers. In one year the OS may look totally different and evolved by end users and developers. There is the possiblity that the N9 in the future may be able to run Android apps to make you happy.
